AROHIBALD W. REID, OF SGHENEGTADY, NEW YORK.
MACHINE FOR UNHAIRING HI DES.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,841, dated April 5, 1881 Application filed September 29, 1880. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD W. REID, of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Unhairin g Hides, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to machines for fleshing and removing the hair from hides, in
[O which machines the hides are placed upon a suitable support and the hair removed by tools carried by a revolving drum or wheels.
Heretofore difficulty has been experienced with such machines on account of the metal 1;, tools employed, which tend to scratch and scab the-hides.
The object of my invention is to prevent injury to the hides during the unhairing operation, and at the same time to thoroughly and rapidly remove the hair; and to this end my invention consists in tools made of rubber, set in a revolving wheel, to move in contact with the surface of the hide while it is held on a suitable support.
I have discovered that vulcanized rubber is especially adapted for this purpose, as it clings to the hair and effects the unhairing without injury to the hide.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation ot'an unhairing-machine fitted with my improved tools, and Fig. 2 is a side view of one tool-holder in larger size.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The machine is substantially similar to the machine for scouring leather shown in Letters Patent granted to me July 16, 1872. My present improvement adapts this machine for use in unhairing hides; but it is to be understood that the improved tools can be used with machines of different construction.
A is a rotating wheel or disk on a shaft, B, and having the unhairing-tools O secured in holders D, that are attached to the rim of the wheel.
E is the support for the leather, the same consisting of a curved plate, adjustable by screws on its supporting-stand in any desired manner, for regulating the pressure against the tools 0. The plate is also provided with springs, which allow it to give way to heavy pressure. Thesefeatures,being-in common use, do not need more detailed description.
The tools 0 are rectangular blocks clamped rigidly in holders D, with one edge projecting for contact with the hide upon support E. These blocks are preferably vulcanized rubber, having a small amount of flexibility.
In operation the hides are placed. on the table F at the top of plate E and allowed to ban g down over the plate. The tools 0 act to remove the hair to the width of their projecting edges, and the hide is to be moved from side to side until the whole surface has been brought under the tools. take firm hold on the hair and remove it without scratching or cutting the surface, and do the work in a most rapid and thorough manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 111 machines for unhairing hides wherein the hides are pressed against moving tools, tools of vulcanized rubber, held rigidly in holders of suitable form, substantially as set forth.
AROHIBALD W. REID.
