Description

I H. E. BARBER. SHARPENER FOR KNIVES AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION HLED JULY 9, 1919.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
HIRAM E. BARBER, 0F SHERIDAN, WYOMING.
SHARPENER FOR KNIVES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed July 9,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM E. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residin at Sheridan, in the county of Sheridan, tate of WVyoming, have invented a newand useful Sharpener for Knives and the like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a sharpener for knives and other blades, and has for an object to provide a relatively simple and economically constructed device which may be easily handled, and which requires no turning of cranks, gear wheels or other costly parts which easily get out of repair.
The invention has for another object the provision of an improved guiding means for a sharpener adapted to receive a blade and hold the same in proper position for sharpening opposite sides of the blade, and for presenting different portions of an abrasive surface against the opposite sides of the blade by merely drawing the latter lengthwise through the guiding means.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a knife sharpener constructed in accordance with the present invention and as applied to the edge of a table.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the knife sharpener, illustrating its manner of use when held in the hand.
Corresponding and like. parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the sharpener comprises, a frame 10 which is substantially V Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7,1920.
1919; Serial No. 309,561.
U-shaped having the opposed arm portions 7 l1 and. 12, the latter constituting the base or bottom of a casing 13 whichprojects from the frame and forms a partthereof. The arm 11 of the frame isv provided with a clamping screw 14- having a swiveled head 15 on its inner end toward the arm 12, and provided upon its outerorotherend with a handle 16 adapted for use in turning the screw 14 for clamping the sharpener in position, and also for use vin supporting the sharpener should it be desiredto temporarily hold the same in thehand i The casing 13 is provided with an abrasive roller .17 which is of substantially'spool construction and provided with inner opposed frusto-conical sharpening faces 18 and mounted upon a shaft 'or spindle 19 which has bearing in the opposite sides of the easing 13.
The casing 13 is provided at one side With a diagonally extending guiding groove or slot 20 adapted to receive therein a knife blade, such as at 21, and to hold the blade with one side against one of the faces 18 and the other side against the opposite face 18. The knife 21 may thus be held in contact with the opposed faces of the abrasive roller, and the latter may be rotated by movement of theknife 21 in a lengthwise direction through the diagonal slot 20 so as to present a continuously changing abrasive surface to the opposite sides of the knife edge;
The casing 13 is provided at one side, preferably adjacent one end of the slot 20, with a pair of outwardly extending lugs 22 which may be employed for bracing the'casing during use, and which, as shown in Fig. 4, may be employed as rests upon'which the device may be supported near the edge of a table when the device is held by the, handle 16.
In use, the frame of the device may be clamped upon the edge of a table 23, or the like, as shown in Fig. 1, and secured rigidly in position by turning the handle 16 and binding the swiveled head 15 against the under side of the table 23. When in this position, a knife blade may be quickly and easily fitted into the slot 20. The opposite sides of the knife blade rest against the opposed grinding surfaces 18. The knife may now be drawn lengthwise through the slot and upon such movement the abrasive roller 17 is turned and, by virtue of the diagonal positioning of the knife blade 21, the grinding faces 18 are caused to frictionally rub against the oaposite sides of the edge of the blade to effectively and simultaneously grind said opposite sides.
diagonally across the side of the casing 13,
c a two-fold result is accomplished, namely, the blade is sharpened simultaneously at opposite sides, and second the grinding surfaces 18 are caused to frictionally rule 7 against the opposite sides of the blade while V at the same'time the rotary movement is imparted to the roller 17.
If it is desired to temporarily'hold the sharpener in position for use, it ma be held in the hand by grasping the hand e 16 and the lugs 22 may be fitted over-the edge 7 of a table to support the casing'13'a'gainstr the thrust and draw of the knife 21 or other 7 blade which may be fitted in the guide 20.
The rear side of the casing 13 forms a shoulder engaging the edge of the table or shelf and holds the device from slipping over the surface of the table should pressure be exerted upon the handle 16 to slide the device awa from the o erator.
aving thus described the invention, What I claim as new and desireto secure by 'Let- 30 ters Patent, is
1. A knife sharpener including'aframe provided With a clamp, a handle projecting "from the: clamp and providing a means for 1 manipulating the frame, a casing carried by By arranging the guide 20'obl1quely or the frame, abrading means Within the cas mg, and a lug'pro ectlng from the device and adapted to form a rest for cooperation with the handle to steady the sharpener when it is not clamped in position.
2. A knife-sharpener including a U shaped frame, a clamping screw threaded in'one of lthe'arms of the frame, a handle applied to the clamping screw, a casing carried by the other arm of theframe, anabrading wheel Within the casing, and a" lug projecting from the casing and adapted to format rest for cooperation withthe handle to steady the device When it is used' vvithout being clamped .in position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of 'tWo subscribing Witnesses.
