The invention relates to a ily swatter, and more especially to structural renements over the subject matter of letters Patent No, 2,312,780, issued on or about the 2nd day of March, 1943.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, wherein the swatting blade or section thereof is readil?,7 and easily removed, it being detachably clamped in place for association with the handle shank or stem of the article, the clamping medium for the blade or section being swingingly supported to close against the said section or blade and in this position is fastened securely to the said shank or stem, thus holding such blade or sectio-n from becoming accidently detached, yet when it becomes uniit for service the same can be removed or detached and a new blade or section substituted, thereby avoiding the discarding of the article as a whole.

Another object-of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, wherein the construction of the clamping medium materially strengthens the joining area of the handle shank or stern with the blade or section, in that the latter is partially folded about such area and reinforced by said medium, the latter being hingedly supported for opening and closing movements, whereby the blade or section can be readily detached Without requiring special tools or a tool or skilled workmanship, there being no permanent tacking, Wire stitching or other similar fasteners required for this purpose.

A further object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, wherein material refinements are involved therein over the subject-matter of Letters Patent No. 2',312,`

780, issued on or about March 2', 1943,

A still further object of the invention is the provision of an article of this character, which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and eiiicient in its purpose, strong, 'durable,` susceptible of withstanding severe usage, readily and easily handled, it being possessed of a minimum number of parts, and inexpensive to manufacture.

With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which shows the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed o-ut in the claims hereunto appended.

Referring to the drawing in detail A designates generally the fly swatter or article in its entirety constructed in accordance with the invention, which comprises a straight shank or stem Iii formed with double wire lengths having a slightly spread open-loop handle end II and a substantially triangular shaped opposed head end I2, the shank orstem and ,these ends being created from a single piece 0f wire. The double lengths of wire at a determined point along the stretches at the shank or stem may be intercoiled or twisted together as at I3, to avoid the separati-on of the lengths of wire, which might result in the spreading thereof and similarly the head and handle ends, respectively.

The outer straight cross run portion I4, at the head end -I2 forms a pintle for a hinged sleeve l5 cut and bent from a clamping medium I6 in the form of a plate, which for a major portion thereof is correspondingly shaped to the head end I2, and in this manner the said medium can be swung away from the said head end or to an open position thereto or swung against the said head end to closed position, resultant from the hinge connection of the plate and head end.

Adapted lto be detachably clamped to the head end I2 is a swatting blade or section I'I, in this instance, made from wire mesh fabric, although it may be made from any other suitable material to meet the requirements intended thereof. It is preferable to have the opposite side edges y of the plate I6 which are angled correspondingly to the side stretches I8 of the head end I2, folded on themselves to effect reinforced blunt edgings, and curled as at I9 for seating when this plate I6 is in clamping position with relation to the head end l 2.

The plate I6 is formed with a half-sleeve formation 20 matching the shank or stem I0 for its seating therein when the said plate is in clamping position. This formation 20 when seating the shank or stem I0 with the blade Vor section ll in attached position on the head end i2 is embraced by a coiled Wrapping of Wire 2l, which is also carried about the said shank or section It! at the open side of the formation 20, and in this manner the plate i6 is securely held in clamping position.

The 'blade or section Il is removably attached to the head end l2 by placing one end portion of such blade or section over the latter at that side opposite to the plate ll, which at this time is in open position relative to this head end I2, then uniformly folding the corners 22 of this blade or section Il over and against the said end l2. When the corners 22 have been so folded the plate I6 will be closed against the same, and the formation 2B fastened to the shank or stem l0 in the manner before explained, and thus the said shank and blade are firmly and securely connected together, and the article completed for service.

When the blade or section I1 becomes unfit for service then .the clamping plate I6 is opened so that a new blade or section can be substituted for detachable connection to the shank or stem I0, and in this Way increase the usefulness of the handle.

What is claimed is:

1. An article of the kind described, comprising an operating handle shank having a -head at one end provided With a cross pintle, a swatting blade having an end portion overlapping said head, opposite corners of said end portion folded about the sides of the head to lie against the face thereof opposite to that occupied by the said end portion of the blade, a clamping medium .hinged to the pintle and overlying the folded corners of the blade for detachably securing the latter to the head and means detachably securing the clamping medium to said handle shank.

An article of the kind described, comprising an operating handle shank having a head provided with a pintle transversely thereof, a swatting blade having an end portion overlapping said head, and folded about the same, and a clamping plate hinged to the pintle and overlying the folds of said end portion for detachably securing the blade to the head and means detachably securing the clamping medium to said handle shank,

An article of the kind described, comprising an operating handle shank having a head, a swatting blade having one end portion overlapping the head, a clamping plate hinged to the head for detachably securing the overlapping end portion of the blade to the head, and means detachably fastening the clamping plate to the handle shank.

A fiy swatter comprising a handle having a head at one end consisting of side arms and a cross arm, a swatting blade having one end overlapping the head with its corners folded over the side arms of the head, a clamping plate hinged to the cross arm of the head having its side edges bent down to seat against the side arms of the head, and means detachably securing said plate in clamping position.

5. A fly swatter comprising a handle having a head at one end consisting of side arms and a cross arm, a swatting blade having one end overlapping the head with its corners folded over the side arms of the head, a clamping plate hinged to the cross arm of the head for detachably securing the folded corner portions of the blade to the head, and means detachably securing the free end of said plate to said handle.
