Description

'April 13, 1937. A F SHAFTER 2,077,132
HANDLE CONSTRUCTION FORA FLY SWATTERS AND THE LIKE Patented Apr. 13, 1937 UNITED STATES HANDLE CONSTRUCTION FOR FLY SWAT- TERS AND THE LIKE Adolph F. Shafter, Decatur, Ill., assigner to U. S.
Manufacturing Corporation, Decatur, Ill., a corporation of Illinois Application June 27, 1935, Serial No. 28,659
12 Claims.
This invention relates to improvement in handle construction for fly swatters and the like, and the principal object is the provision of a construction which is simple and easy to manufacture, attractive in appearance, strong in construction, and at the same time has the requisite resiliency or flexibility for proper use.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a handle construction which is formed of a. single piece of metal having one end looped or turned around a gripping element and having the other end split and forked to provide means whereby it may be secured to a fly swatter or other implement.
Other objects includeimprovements in detail of construction whereby a very effective device of the character described isprovided.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and then sought to be dened in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof and which sho-w, merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure, a preferred embodiment of my invention, it being expressly understood, however, that various changes may be made in practice within the scope of the claims without digressing from my inventive idea.
In the drawing- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of one form of device constructed to embody my invention.
Figure 2 is an elevation of the same device taken from the opposite side of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken substantially on line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an enlarged view taken in section through the gripping element to show the manner of connecting the gripping element and the handle.
Fig. 5 is a detailed view of a slight modication.
Referring now to the drawing, the handle mem ber is designated generally by the reference character I and is formed to provide a gripping part 2 and at the other end a securing part 3 whereby a ily swatter 4 or any other implement or utensil may be connected or attached thereto.
This handle member I is preferably in the form of a flat piece of material, preferably of steel, with the securing part split as at 5 for a substantial distance from that end of the handle and with the split parts 5' bent at an angle The gripping end of the handle is preferably v made in the form of a loop I by'bending the metal at right angles at 8, 9, Ill, II, I2 and I3. This forms lan open loop' substantially rectangular in shape and the free end I 4 of the handle member is secured to the handle member proper. In the form shown in the drawing this connection is made by splitting the' free end of 'the metal at I5 and bending the two prongs or fingers l around the handle member las lclearly shown in Figures 1,'2'and 4. It is to be` understood that Vthis is merely one method of connecting these parts together and that it may be accomplished by spot welding, riveting or in other Ways as long as a closed gripping loop is provided. v
It is to be understood that the gripping loop I may serve as a means whereby the implement or utensil is held by the user or operator, or a gripping element l1 may be positioned within said loop l. This gripping element may be provided with a groove I8 around the sides and ends thereof, which groove is adapted to receive the open loop metal gripping element 'l and thereby hold the parts together with the gripping element' I'I within the loop-l. This gripping element may be made of `any suitable material such as wood, composition and the flikeyand may be provided with the opening I9 or the loop or staple 20 for hanging purposes.
The handle is preferably made o-f flat metal as illustrated, but this metal may be of other shapes.` It provides sufficient strength and also the requisite resiliency and elasticity for use with ily swatters, aswell as other implements and 4 prising an elongated metallic element having o one end split and bent to form a pair of angularly disposed arms to form attaching means for the implement or utensil and having its Vother end bent and formed into an open loop.
2. A handle for implements and utensils comprising an elongated metallic element having one end split and bent to form a pair of angularly disposed arms to form attaching means for the implement or utensil and having its other end bent and formed into an open loop with a gripping element held within and by said loop.
3. A handle for implements and utensils comprising an elongated metallic element having one end split and bent to form a pair of angularly disposed arms to form attaching means for the implement or utensil and having its other end bent and formed into an open loop with the end of the handle member secured to the ,handle member proper near the upper end of said loop.
4. A handle member for implements, utensils and the like comprising an elongated flat metal member having one end split so as to provide two arms, said arms being bent at an angle to form a V shaped securing end for the handle member, the other end of the handle member being bent to form an open rectangular loop with the eXtreme end thereof secured to the handle member proper.
5. A handle member for implements, utensils and the like, comprising an elongated nat metal member having one end split so as to provide two arms, said arms being bent at an angle to form a V shaped securing end for the handle member, the other end of the handle member being bent to form an open rectangular loop with the extreme end thereof being formed with a pair of bendable ngers which are bent around the handle member proper to forma permanent connection.
6. A handle member for implements, utensils and the like, comprising an elongated flat metal member having one end split so as to provide two arms, said arms being bent at an angle to 40 form a V shaped securing end for the handle member, the other end of the handle member being bent to form an open rectangular loop with the extreme end thereof being secured to the handle member proper and a gripping ele- 45 ment positioned Within and secured to said open loop.
'7. A handle for implements and utensils, comprising an elongated, at, resilient metallic element having its upper end split for a substantial 50 distance to provide two arms, said arms being bent at an angle to each other to form a V- shaped securing portion, and said arms being at on both sides and thin.
8. A handle member for implements, utensils and the like, comprising an elongated at metal member having its upper end formed to provide a securing end portion adapted to be connected to an implement or utensil, the other end of the handle member being bent to form an open rectangular loop with it's inner surface flat, and Y a gripping element positioned within and secured to said open loop with the rlat face of the open loop in engagement with the side faces of the gripping element.
9. A handle member for implements, utensils and the like, comprising, an elongated at metal member having, its upper end formed to provide a securing end portion adapted to be connected to an implement or utensil, the other end of the handle member being bent to form an open rectangular loop with its inner surface at, the end of said open loop portion of the handle member being split to form two fingers which are bent around the body of the handle member to form said open loop, and a gripping element positioned within and secured to said open Vloop with the at face of the open loop in engagement with the side faces of the gripping element.
10. A handle member for implements and utensils comprising an elongated metal member having one end bent .to form an open loop, the extreme end of said loop being formed with bendable fingers which 'are bent around said metal member to form a connection therewith.
411..A handle member for implements and utensils comprising an elongated metal member having one end bent to form an open loop, the extreme end of said loop being secured to said metal member to form a connection therewith and a gripping element positioned within and secured to said open loop.
12. A handle member adapted for use with ily swatters, said handle member being in the form of an elongated flat thin metal member having its upperk end split to provide a pair of arms, said arms being bent away from each other to form a substantially V-shaped securing end, said arms being thin and both sides of said arms being flat so as not to substantially increase the total thickness of the lower end portion of the body of ai'ly swatter body adapted to be attached to said handle member.
