Description

1945- E. F. DESSUREU 2,376,584
GARMENT HANGER Filed June 7. 1944 PatentedMny 22, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT RANGER .Ernest F. Dessureau, Meriden, Conn. Application June 7, 1944, Seril No. 539,080
1 Claim.
My invention relates to an improvement in garment hangers and particularly to clips to be attached thereto. In the use of garment hangers. it is often desired tu suspend a garment from the lower-bar of the hanger instead of folding a garment over the lower-bar. For this purpose varicus devices have been employed for attachment to garments to be suspended. If such devices are employed, it is desirable that they shduld be capable of being secnrely connected With the bottom-bar of a hanger.
One object of my invention is to provide a clip With means whereby said clip may be securely attached to the lower-bar of a garment hangr.
Another object of my invention is to provide means for rigidly securing clips tu garment hang ers.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear to those skilled in the art from the present disclosnre, this invention includes all featurcs in the said disclosure which are novel over the prior art.
In the accompanying drawing, in which certain modes of carrying out the present invention are shown for illustrative urposes:
Fig.,1 is a front view of a garment hanger embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a side view of one of the clips, detached;
Fig. 3 is a rear view of one of the said clips; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a garment hanger l formed from wire in the usual manner and havlng the usual lower-bar I l.
Mounted on the said bar Il are one or more clips l2. Each clip comprises a front-plate l3 formed from metal or other suitable material,
- and having lugs l 4 extending forwardly. The
lower-end of the plate is turned forwardly to form a jaw 15. The upper-end is rolled backward to form an upperfinger l6, and below the finger I6 is a lower-finger lTstruck rarwardly from the plate.
Pivotally connected With the lugs l 4 is a lever l8 having a. jaw 19 at its lower-end to coact With the jaw l and a finger-piece 20. Mounted on the pivot-pin 21, which connects the lever la With the plate 13, is a helical spring 22, une end of which bears on the face of the plate and the other end of which bears on the flnger-piece 20, the tendency of the spring being to force the jaw l9 toward the jaw l5, in the usual manner of springclips.
Secured to the back of the plate is a verticallymovable slide 23, the upper-end of which extends upward through a slot 24 in the lower-finger ll, the said slide 23 having a head 25 which is curved so as to engage- With the lower surface of the lower-bar l I of the hanger. The slide may be secured tothe plate in any desired manner which permits of adjustment. As shown, this is accomplished by means of a knurled-head screw 26 extending through a. slot 21 in the slide into engagement With the plate I3.
T0 apply a clip to a hanger, the slide will be moved downward to permit the fingers [6 and H to pass over the bar II, The slide is then moved the upper finger, vvill grip the bar Il and hold the rclip firmly at any desired point.
' This construction of clips permits them to be adjusted on a garment and then to be attached to the hanger, or the clips may be attached to the-hanger where they may be fixed at the desired place before the garment is engaged With the clips.
The invention may be carried out in other specific ways than those hereiu set forth without departing from the spirit and essential characteristics of.the invention, and the present embodiments are, therefore, to be :considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, and all changes coming within the meaning and equivalency range of the appended claim are intended to be embraced therein.
I claim:
The combination With a garment hanger having a lower bar, of a clip comprising a plate formed With a finger at its upper end adapted to setover and be supported by said bar, said plate also forme'd With a jaw at its lower end; a lever pivotally connected to the said plate and formed at its lower end With a jaw adapted to coact With the jaw on the said plate, and a vertically-movable slide adapted to be :clamped to said plate
