This invention relates to improvements in centrifugal buckets useful for twisting and collecting natural or artificial filaments or yarns or for liquid treating 'ofhydroextractionof liquidtreated wound packages 'or cakes formed or placed therein. It is particularly an improvement" in one of the forms of centrifugal bucket shown in my copendingapplication Serial No. 433,155, filed March 3, 1942. As shown in Figure? of my copending application, the motor maybe provided with a hollow spindle for driving the centrifugal bucket and a rod reciprocable within the hollow spindle and terminating at its upper end in a flat plate which forms a supporting base for the package or cake within the centrifugal bucket serves to eject the cake after the handling, such f v .ascollecting, liquid-treating, or hydro-extracting, within the centrifugal bucket is finished, such election being effected by means of cams'operating upon a .plate secured to the base of the reciprocablerod. Alternati ely, as shown in Figures 4 to 6 of that appli tion, a reciprocable cake-supporting plate is provided with a plurality of depending rods'which extend through corresponding openings in the bottom of the cen-- trifugal bucket and carry therebeneath an annu- 1 lar plate by. which the actuation effected by cam means is transmitted through the rods to the cake-supporting plate in the centrifugal bucket to elect the cake.
The use of a hollow shaft fordriving the centrifugal bucket operates satisfactorily but has the disadvantage that because of the highspeed at which the centrifugal bucket is normally operated, special care must be taken in manufacturlng the hollow shaft to'assure that it. is balanced perfectly. Otherwise, severe strains and excessive vibrations are developed during operation of the centrifugal bucket. On this account,
. the manufacture of hollow shafts for this purpose is an expensive procedure. As shown, a motor 2 arrang'edlwith its rotat- 1o ing spindle vertical drives a centrifugal bucket 3 carriedthereon by means (if a hub 4 fitting over the upper end of the spindle 5, The bucket may be of any standard form-used for twisting and collecting, "liquid-treating and liquid-extracting I 15 purposes and it may beprovided with the conventional liquid-escape perforations in the walls and with a cover and cover-locking devic of conventional construction. A cake-supporting member in the form of a plate 6 normally rests against eration thereof as shown in Figure 1 and is pro vided with dependingrods I which are symmetrlcally disposed about the center thereof. These rods 1 are secured to the under side of the plate 6 or they may be integral therewith and extend v through a corresponding number of symmetrically arranged openings '8 through thebottom of the bucket. The lower ends of the rods are secured to an annular plate 9 whose under 'sur-'. face is adapted to cooperate with any suitable lifting means HI. The rods I may be of any desired length, preferably being sufllciently long to effect complete election-of the wound package or cake within the spinning bucket without causing the lower plate 9 tostrike the bottom of the bucket. A sleeve H havin an internal diameter at least as large as the extrenal diameter of the body of the bucket is secured to the plate 9 carried by the rods 1 and in the position shown 40 in Figure l is of sufllcient height tosubstantiany inclose the space between the bottom of the bucket and the plate 9, thereby preventing the'deveiopment of windage and excessive power consumptlon because ofthe beating of-the air by the rods I. Preferably, the plate 9 is provided with a hearing I! which cooperates with the spindle 5 of This .hub 4 of the spinning bucket I in the normal op erating position (Figure 1) so that it willno't strike the hub when the election device is moved into the electing position shown in Figure 2. The cam or other means 10 for actuating the elector device may take any suitable form and I may lie-operated by hand or automatically upon the bottom of the centrifugal bucket during cpthe completion oi the treatment or the cake within the spinning bucket whether that treatthe buckets serve to twist and collect the filaments in the form of a wound cake so that a plurality of such spinning buckets may be defied at once. Alternatively, the motors and centrifugalbuckets may be carried through a cyclic path along one portion oi which they-pass a stationary means for actuatinz the election devices of the respective buckets individually as in my cop nding application While a preferred embodiment oi the invention has beenshown. it is to be Imderstood that changes and variations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined bythe appended claims. In apparatus for handling filamentary material, a rotatable shalt, a centriiugalbucket as thereon. a cake-supporting member within the bucket, a plurality of rods extending from the member and reciprocable through apertures in the bucket bottom. an annular member carried by the rods outside the bucket and a sleeve carrled by the annular member having an internal diameter at least as large as the extemai diameter oi the body of the bucket substantially inclosing the space between the bucket bottom and 1 i0 thetnnular member.
