POLICEMANS BATON.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,234, dated January 4, 1881.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, ROBERT A. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evergreen, in the county of Conecuh and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Policemens Batons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of -the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to 1o which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.

This invention has for its object to furnish a baton for policemen and other ofcers Whose duty it is to apprehend desperate characters, for Whose arrest measures must be resorted to which are attended with danger to the life of zo the criminal.

It consists in constructing the baton with an elastic cushion or pad surrounding its outer end and extending back along the stick a suitable distance.

3o A suitable portion, a', is taken for the handle,

and may be covered with any suitable material, if desired. About midway, and at the terminus of the part I have called the hand1e,7 there is formed an annular lip or projection, a2, and from this lpto the outer end the baton is increased slightly and gradually in diameter, so as to give to the part c3 a slight bell shape. Within the outer end, c3, there is formed a longitudinal hole, a4, into which is 4o put a metal core,a.5, if desired, for loading the baton.

b is an elastic annular cushion orpad, made of greatestdiameter at its outer end and tapered to its inner or smaller end. It is formed with a central bore, so that it can be slipped over and cover the outer end, a3, of the baton. The inner end of the hollow pad or cushion, being thin, can be readily drawn over the lip a2, on which it grasps and forms a strong attachment to keep the pad from slipping off'. 5o The slight bell shape of the end c3 affords an additional means for retaining the pad on the baton. The cushion, as will be seen, is made thickest over the outer end ofthe baton, at the point where the blow is the heaviest.

In manufacturing this pad I sometimes round or bevel ont' the outer end slightlyY back from the end, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1, because in most cases the force of the blow will fall at a point inward from the end. As 6o the force exerted by a given blow would diminish according as it would be received on points inward toward the handle, so the pad has been diminished gradually in thickness. Thus I avoid use ot' all supertlnous material. 65

With the use of the ordinary wood baton the skull or bones of the criminal are often fractured. Such accidents will not occur With the use of my baton. Any ordinary blow no heavier than that given by the common wood 7o baton, when given with my device, Will fell the criminal to the ground without breaking skull or other bones.

It' it is desired to provide a heavier baton,a core of lead or other suitable material can be put into the bore a4, and thereby increase the weight to any desired degree.

Having thus described my invention, what vI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent, is- 8o 1. A policemans baton composed ot' a main stem made of wood and a cylindrical rubber tube or cushion slipped onto the outer end of the wooden stem and held in place by its own elastic force, substantially as set forth.

2. The improved baton composed of the stick a, provided with the annular lip azintermediate between its ends, and the hollow elastic cushion b, made thickest at its outer end and tapered to a thin edge at its inner end 9o and clasped over the lip c2, substantially as set forth.
