JAMES B. SHARP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 235,028, dated November 30, 1880.
Application filed Oetober13, 1880. (N0 model.) a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES B. SHARP, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates, essentially, to the construction of the ends of a pair of suspenders; and it consists in the combination, with the shoulder-straps, of two cords or bands which pass, respectively, through guides at the front and rear ends of the shoulderstraps, and the rear parts of which terminate with a button-hole, both of which are provided with a button-hole at a point forward of the front guide, thence pass rearwardly through another guide, and terminate with a button-hole, so that each cord or band comprises three ends, and, while it is allowed a great liberty of motion, it readily returns to a normal position.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a part-side view and part section. Figs. 2 and 3 show modifications hereinafter described in detail.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the shoulder-straps,
and B the cords or bands, each comprising three ends, 0' G The cords or bands B may be either round or flat.
At the opposite ends of both shoulderstraps A are guides D D, which consist, in this example, of pulleys, but which may be constructed in the form of a tube or any other suitable device.
Each of the cords or hands B passes through one of the rear pulleys, D, and one of the front pulleys, D, and the rear part thereof, which constitutes the end 0, terminates in a button-hole, 6.
At a point forward of the front pulley, D, the cord B is provided with a return-bend, f, to form the button-hole for the end 0 The cord thence passes rearwardly through a guide, D and terminates in a button-hole, g, for the end 0 In the example shown in Fig. l the cord B extends in a straight line from the guide D to the guide D. If desired, however, this intermediate part of the cord may be bent or drawn downward by connecting the rearwardly-extending portion of the cord thereto, as by means of a slide, h, as shown in Fig. 2 or 3, or a permanent fixture; and when a slide is used a suitable stop maybe combined therewith for retaining this slide in a fixed position.
In the example shown in Fig. 2 the guide D is used in connection with the slide h, while in Fig. 3 the slide takes the place of said guide.
By the arrangement of the cords B each is permitted to move freely in any direction and adapt itself to the position of the body, while it readily returns to a normal position. In this example the shoulder-straps A cross each other, but they can also be arranged in any other way.
It should be remarked that a good result can be obtained by making the button-holes D D D separate from the cords or bands B as, for example, in the form of flat straps, and attached to the cords or bands in a suitable manner, as shown in Fig. 4; and rearwardlyextending portion of the cords or bands, moreover, may be attached to the main portion thereof, as shown in said figure, instead of being made in one piece therewith.
I am aware that it is not new to make suspender-ends of cords or bands running through guides and bent to form buttonholes, and I do not claim such construction, broadly.
Heretofore suspenders have been constructed of shoulder-straps provided at their front and back end with guides or pulleys, combined with two independent cords provided at each end with a button-hole, and such, broadly, is not claimed.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described suspender, consisting of the shoulder-straps A A, provided with guides D D D and the cords or bands B B, passing, respectively, through the guides at the front and rear ends of the shoulder'straps,
the rear ends of the cords or bands terlninatin testimony whereof I have hereunto set in g in button-holes, and each of said cords or my hand and seal in the presence of two subbands being provided with a return-bend havscribing witnesses.
ing a button-hole forward of the front guide JAMES B. SHARP. [L. 8.] and then passing rearwardly through another Witnesses:
guide and terminating in a button-hole, all \V. HAUFF,
substantially as described. CHAS. WAHLERS.
