BAG-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 234,012, dated November 2, 1880. Application filed July 13, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LEWIs A. FIsH, of Faribault, in the county of Rice and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Bag-Holder, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and convenient device especially adapted for use in flouring-mills and feedstores and granaries for holding bags open for filling and conveying them, open or closed, from one place to another.

The invention consists in the combination, with the frame provided with staples, a baseplate, and wheels, of the fixed and the adj ustable toothed holder, each provided with curved arms; and in the combination, with the fixed holder, consisting of a plate having a vertical and horizontal arm, of the laterally-adj ustable holder, consisting of a plate toothed on its lower edge, moving laterally between staples, with one of which staples the teeth engage, and having a central vertical and horizontal arm, that receives and holds one side of the bag, as will be hereinafter fully described.

Figure l is a front elevation of the device with an open bag secured in position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line a: m, Fig. 1.

In the drawings, A represents an upright frame, support, or standard, consisting, in this instance, of a frame, a, strengthened by crossbars I) 1;, having handles 0 c. The frame A is sustained in an upright position by means of a base-plate, A, which is attached, by screws or bolts 3, to the lower end of frame A. The base-plate A is bent at right angles, and the front portion, d, extends in front of frame A, where it rests upon the ground and supports the frame A on ope side, the other side of frame A being supported by the Wheels h, which rest on the ground, and are attached by axle g to lugs or earsf, that project from the rear part of the base-plate A, as shown. The frame A is thus firmly supported on both sides in an upright position by means of the base-plate A. When it is necessary to move the apparatus the frame A is turned down to an inclined position, so that it will rest and run on the wheels h.

B represents the fixed section of the bagholder, consisting of a plate, k, having a short vertical arm, is, with a long horizontal arm, l, carried on the end thereof, and said section B is secured to the face of the support A, near one side thereof and a little below the upper edge, by screws m or other convenient device, and said vertical arm It has its lower end slightly sprung forward, as shown at n, Fig. 3, thereby holding and supporting the horizontal arm loff from the face of the support A, in order that the upper edge of a bag may be readily introduced between said section B and frame A, said arm 1 being continued a short distance toward the edge of the support A and parallel with the face of said support, is then bent outward, as shown at c, Fig. 3, at right angles to the face thereof, and has its extreme end curved inward, as shown at w, to prevent injury to the bag which it assists in holding.

0 represents the laterally-adjustable section of the bag-holder, consisting of a metal plate, 0, toothed or serrated on its lower edge, and held and sliding horizontally in the staples E E, that are fixed vertically and parallel with each other in the face of the support A, while from the center of the horizontal plate 0 a short arm, 10,.depends perpendicularly and is slightly sprung outward, as shown at q, Fig. 3, to admit of the introduction of the upper edge of a bag behind it, and said arm 19 carries on its lower end and at right angles therewith a long horizontal arm, r, that extends a short distance toward the contiguous edge of the support A, parallel with the face of said support, and is then bent outward at right angles, as shown at w, and has its extreme end bent inward, as shown at z, toward the holder-see tion B.

D represents a bag in position on the device, the mouth of said bag D being held open by the engagement therein of the horizontal bent arms of the sections B (l of the bag-holder, the section 0 being moved laterally to produce the required tension of the mouth of said bag D,

and then fastened in place by the engagement of one of its teeth, m, in the outer staple, E, and thus said bagD is held open and supported in position to be filled.

By moving the holder or section 0 inward the tension is relieved and the mouth of the bag D can be readily removed from the bagholder.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a bag-holder, the combination, with the frame A, provided with the staples E, the baseplate A, and wheels h, of the fixed holder B, provided with the curved arm 11 l w. and the adjustable toothed holder 0, provided with the LEWIS AUSTIN FISH. Witnesses:
