To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN ASchiuma, offGhicago, in the county of Cook andState of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Tailors Measuring Device and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled,in the art to which it appertains to construct and make use of the same, Vreference being hadto the accompanying drawings, and to-letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specifica-tion.
The object of this invention is the improved construction and arrangement'of asimple and convenient device adapted totake the accurate measure of any part of the human form.
The nature of this improvement consists in the employment of a series of Iiexible metallic strips, which are attached to a main or central part composed of the same material. These elastic strips are capable of being adjusted to any required position or angle, and are securely held in the diferent positions by means of suitable clamping devices, the exact arrangement and operation of which will be hereinafter more fully explained in detail.
To better illustrate my invention, I refer to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l represents the outlines of the front part of a coat, -to which my improved measuring apparatus is attached by means of the belts or bands A A, which are buckled tight around the form to be measured.

The screw-caps c c, having milled edges, are conveniently operated by the thumb and iinger.
a2 a2 are a series of setvscrews having large heads, and are inserted in the boxes a3, which are placed upon the parts or strips c a, and are capable of a longitudinal adjustment,and are securely clamped in the required position by the set-screws a2 a2.
The boxes a3 are provided with the sharp projecting points c', as shown in the sectional detail, 4, of the drawings. These points are for the purpose of transferring the outlines ofthe measurement taken to the paper or material from which the pattern is to be cut.
The iexible strip attached near to the upper end of the part B is intended to be used on either side of the same, taking the measurement of the shoulder or neck.
The apertureD at the upper end of the part B is for the reception of a convenient device for attaching the same to the wearing-apparel while the measure is being taken.

Fig. 2 represents the apparatus adjusted to take the measure for pantaloons. Fig. 3 is an enlarged representation of a portion of the main strip B, already described in Fig. l of the drawings. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section,in detail, taken on the line w x, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a modification in the manner of constructing the device, dispensing with the set-screws a2 a2 and admitting of the small strips or parts being shortened or len gthened, as required in practical use, and being clamped in position by the screw-caps c c, the markingpoints c being stationary. Fig. 6 represents a longitudinal section taken on the line y y, Fig. 5.
The device shown in Fig. l is all that is required in taking the measurement of either IOC the right or left side, both front and back, two perpendicular lilies being marked out in the center of the back and breast.
ln making ilse of this measuring device the necessity for first transferring the measurement to paper and cutting out a pattern may be entirely dispensed with, if so preferred, by simply placing the device. after the measure for the garment has been taken, upon the cloth or material from which the garment is to be cut and connecting the outer ends or points by the usual lines.
The series of flexible strips ay a are capable of heilig adjusted to any required angle in relation to the main perpendicular part B, and are adapted to be moved inward or outward therefrom, thereby shortening or lengthening the same, as may be necessary, the outer ends thereof taking the required points of measurement,which are afterward connected by proper lines, as above stated. By this method and arrangement the employment of the adjustable screw-points a' a' may be dispensed with, as may also the use of figures and other characters to indicate the different measurements, thus avoiding a great deal ot' useless labor, and at the saine time obtaining a more accurate measure with less labor and in less time than it is possible to do by any other method.
The series of flexible strips herein shown are not provided with a graduated scale, nor
any lines, figures, or other indicating characters, thus allowing the device to be easily and quickly constructed by any one.
By this simple and convenient device the accurate measure for a garment is quickly taken and any existing deformity is nicely fitted.
This device is equally as well adapted for the use of dress-makers as for tailors.
The apparatus is usually constructed of any material suitable for the purpose, preferably, however, of thin metal, sheet brass or steel.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
ln a tailors measuring device, the method or system hereinbefore described of taking the measure for wearing-apparel, by means of the series of flexible strips a a, which are attached at different points to and operated from the main longitudinal part B, said strips being adapted to slide outward or inward from the main part B, and capable 'of' being adjusted to any required angle relative thereto. substantially in the manner and4 for the purpose herein set forth.
