Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred example of the invention, B designates an open top box shaped base member embodying a bottom I0, vertical end walls II and vertical side walls rI2 attached to the end and side edges of the bottom. Within each end portion of the base is mounted a transversely extending reinforcing bar I3 fastened to the bottom.

'The handle lever isv locked in predetermined downward position. when the upper frame section is raised sufciently tofbring the springs 2.4 under proper tension, by swinging the ratch bar 3|- inwardly so that a notch` thereof I engages the shoulder 34 of theY lever to maintain the pressure on the books for a required period of time. The ratch bar is readily released by slight depression of the lever and outward movement of vthe bar to disengage the shoulder whereupon the movable frame section .is automatically drawn to its downward position and the handle leve!` elevated to an f 1. As will be readily apparent the invention provides a simple and durable press which can be quickly and easily operated to effectively press books and like articles of varying size.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be takenas a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
