This invention relates to improvements in tables and has particular reference to a table which may be used in the customary manner or one which may be taken apart and used as a bed table.

The principal object is to provide a table top having both long legs and short legs, either of which may be individually used to support the table top.

Another object 1s to provide a simple 'means for detaching the long leg support from the short legs.

A further object is to produce a table ofthis character which is strong in construction.

A still further object is to rovide a table which is economical to manu acture.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

It is common to employ a table for use on the bed so that a person occupying the bed may have his meals served upon the table. These tables are ordinarily of no use except for this specific purpose. Applicant has therefore provided a table which may be used as a bed table or may also be used as an ordinary table by providing removable legs of greater length than those employed when the table is used on a bed.

In the accompanying drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the table top to which is permanently attached short supporting legs 6 and 7 adJacent the opposite ends thereof. These legs 6 and 7 are braced to the table top 5 as by braces 8 and 9 respectively. These' braces are further cut away as shown at 11 so as to accommodate the up or ends of elongated supporting legs 12 an 13. The elongated legs 12 and 13 have a floor engaging portion of suflicient width to properly bal ance the table as is best illustrated in Fig- 0 ure 4.

A cross brace 14 extends between the legs 12 and 13. The distance between the legs 12 and 13 is such that when the table top 5 and its attached le s 6 and 7 together with braces 05 8 and 9 are p aced over the legs 12 and 13, that the same will come to rest with their upper ends positioned within the notches 11 and in parallel relation to the legs 6 and 7. In order to retain these parts in this position I provide a latch mechanism which is best illustrated in Figure 6 and consists of a de tent 16 hinged as at 17 to the leg 7.

An operating ball crank lever 18 pivoted to the table top 5 serves to manipulate the 15 detent so that it may be drawn entirely with in the plane of the leg 7 or the leg 6, as the case may be, or when extended will engage the notch formed in the upper end of the legs 12 or 13, as the case may be. It will be apparent therefore that by manipulating the ball crank lever 18 the detents carried upon the legs 6 and 7 will be so withdrawn that the table top and its attached parts may be lifted away from the legs 12 and 13 and may be placed upon a bed and used as a bed table as illustrated in Figure 1, and after use it may be readily placed upon the legs 12 and 13 after which the detents will automatically lock the adjacent legs to each other.

It will thus be apparent that I have produced a table which will perform all the objects above set forth.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example of the same and that various changes relative to the material, size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the irit of the invention or the scope of the sub oined claim.

Having thus described my invention, I claim In a device of the character described, a table top, a pair of legs secured to said table top, braces secured to said table top and said legs, a second air of legs spaced one from the other and having their upper extremity engaging said table top and in parallel relation to said first mentioned legs, securing means for detachably securing said first mentioned legs to said second mentioned legs, said detachable means comprising pivoted detents pivotally mounted within the plane of said first mentioned legs and adapted to move into recesses fromed in the upper extremities of said second mentioned legs.
