GEORGE L. SMITH, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
LOOP FOR BRIDLES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 230,831, dated August 3, 1880.
Application filed April 13, 1880.
To all whom ti may concern:
Be it known that 1, GEORGE L. SMITH, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loops for Bridles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an improvementin loops intended to be employed upon the crownpiece of a bridle, as hereinafter fully set forth. It is especially designed to be employed to hold the branches of what is known as the overdraw check-rein of a bridle.
The object of my invention is to provide a manner and at the same time permits it to be readily detached without injury to either the strap or loop.
Figure 1 is a view of a loop formed with permanent lugs, by which it is secured in place. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a strap with two of the loops shown in Fig. lin place. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the loop shown in Fig. 1 is made.
The distinctive characteristics of my loop are clearly shown by the drawings. It is formed by bending a piece of metal in a shape analogous to an ordinary loop, except that its upper side is broken at or near its point of connection with one of the vertical sides and bent upward and carried away from the vertical side sufficiently to permitthe strap to be passed into it. In this way the elastic tongue or upr (No model.)
per portion, a, is formed, being suffieiently near to the vertical part b to permit of an easy insertion and withdrawal of the strap. It is preferably formed of elastic metal of any suitable kind and adapted to forms substantially of the shape shown in the drawings.
The vertical part 1), adjacent to the tongue of the loop, is rounded upon either side, as shown in Fig. 1, and prevents the edges of the strap from catching when it is desired to remove it.
Fig. 3 shows the blank out of which theloop shown in Fig. lis formed. The blank, having been cut out, is bent in any convenient manner, the projections at the sides being turned at right angles with the loop, so as to form appropriate lugs.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The loop for harness herein described, consisting of a metallic blank bent to form the tongue a, vertical part I), having its sides adjacent to the tongue rounded, and permanent lugs, whereby the loop may be secured to the strap, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing improvement in loops for bridles, as above described, I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of April, 1880.
GEO. L. SMITH.
