(Cl. 20G-37) This invention relates to match packages and more particularly to a match package and burnt match receptacle.

Anobject of this invention is to provide in combination with a match package, a receptacle which may be detachably engaged with the package and which is adapted to extinguish the re of the matches and also serve as a holder for burnt matches.

Another object of this invention is to provide as a new varticle of manufacture a match extinguishing receptacle, which may be mounted on a conventional match package for receiving burning matches and for holding the burnt matches in a position out of con-tact with the unburnt matches.

A Afurther object of this invention is to provide a receptacle of this kind, which also includes an abrasive or strike part so that if the match package has a rear abrasive, which would be covered by the receptacle, matches may be struck on the receptacle abrasive.

To the foregoing objects and to others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is disclosed an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral III designates generally a match package I0, which includes a rear wall I I and a cover I2 is formed integral with the rear wall Il and is adapted to engage inwardly of a lower front wall I3, which has positioned on the exterior` surface thereof an abrasive element I4. A plurality of matches I5 of the receptacle,

are adapted to be disposed Within the package and the matches I5 are secured between the rear wall II and the lower front wall I3 by means of a staple I6, or other suitable fastening means.

In order to provide a means whereby burnt matches may be disposed of without throwing the burnt matches in a place where they might do damage or where they may be unsightly and whereby the re of the matches may be extinguished, I have provided a Yburnt match receptacle, generally designated as I'I. The recep-tacle I1 comprises a rear wall I8 and a pair of spaced apart front walls I9 and 26 which constitutes oppositely extending spaced inner edgewise aligned means for removably coupling the receptacle to the folder of the match package It). The iront walls I9 yand 2t are connected to the rear wall I8 by means of connecting side walls 2| and 22 respectively. As shown in Figures 2 and 5, the adjacent or inner edges of the two front walls I9 and '20 are preferably disposed in spaced apart relation and the upper end of the receptacle Il is normally open. An extension 23 is formed with a rear vwall I 8 and extends downwardly therefrom and below the two front edges of the two front -walls I9 and 29. An upwardly and inwardly extending bottom wall 2li is formed integral with the rear wall extension 23 and projects upwardly atan acute angle to the rear wall extension 23 and terminates at its upper edge closely adjacent the lower edges of the two front walls I9 and 20.

YWhen the receptacle I 'I is in removably applied position, with respect to the package IIJ, the two front walls I9 and 2li, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, are adapted to be positioned between the rearmost 4matches I5 and the forward side of the back wall II. By pushing the two front walls I9 and 2U downwardly to a point closely adjacent the staple I6, the receptacle I'I will be firmly held in applied position with respect to the package I and the rear wall I8 will be positioned in rearwardly spaced relation with respect to the rear wall I I. The bottom forming wall 2t, as shown in Figure 3, will be yextended upwardly and will be positioned in contacting relation with the lower portion of the rear wall II, so as to close the pocket formed by the rear wall I8, the two side walls 2| and 22, the extension 23 and the bottom wall 24. vThe back wall I I of the match package, when the receptacle is in applied position, forms the front wall of the pocket or receptacle.

The rear wall I8 adjacent the lower edge thereof, is adapted to have an abrasive 25 positioned thereon so that in the event the match package I0 is provided with an abrasive on the lower portion of the rear wall Il, which would be covered up by the bottom forming wall 24 and extension 23, the match may be struck on the abrasive 25. It will be understood that certain match packages have an abrasive or "scratch on the rear wall thereof and certain others have the abrasive on the front face of the short front wall.

The blank form, which the receptacle I1 is formed of, is shown in Figure 6 and initially the blank comprises a substantially rectangular sheet, generally designated as 26, which is adapted to be bent along a pair of parallel lines 21 and 28 so that the front walls I9 and 20 will be disposed in edge confronting relation and overlie the front face of the rear wall I8. formed integral with the rectangular sheet 26 at substantially the center of one edge thereof and the bottom forming member 24 is alsorformed with the extension 23. The bottom forming wall 24 is adapted to be bent along the dotted line 29 so that in applied position the bottom forming wall 24 will be disposed at an acute angle with respect to the extension 23.

The receptacle I1 may be constructed as a new article of manufacture so that it may be applied to any conventional match package, or if desired the receptacle E1 may be dispensed with the match package I. The matches after having been used and torn from the group held by means of the staple i6, may be inserted in the receptacle I1 through the open upper end 3B of the receptacle I1. By forming the bottom wall member 24 at an acute angle, with respect to the extension 23, when the burnt matches are dropped into the receptacle the heads thereof will be wedged between the bottom forming wall 24 and the eX- tension 23, so that these matches will not readily fall out of the receptacle in the event the receptacle is accidentally inverted. The receptacle I1 is adapted to be formed out of cardboard or the like sothat it can be manufactured at a very small cost.

If desired, the receptacle I1 may, after the match package I8 has been exhausted of matches, be applied to another full match package, the receptacle I1 being easily inserted on the package IIJ by openingr the cover I2 to a straight position with respect to the back wall II, whereupon the cover I2 may be inserted between the back wall i8 and the two front walls I9 and 20. The Afree end of the cover I2 is initially inserted at the lower end of the receptacle I1 so that when the receptacle is in applied position, the bottom wall 24 will be positioned at the lower end of the package I0.

The receptacle hereinbefore described my be usel for extinguishing the fire 4from a'match by inserting the burning end of the match in the open end of the receptacle. and if Vnecessary the receptacle may be compressed vslightly to extinguish the ame thereof.

What I claim is:

l. As a new article of manufacture, an open top receptacle for removably coupling to a match The extension 23 is,

pair of side walls for package having a back wall, said receptacle comprising a rear wall for opposing said back wall, a spacing said rear wall from said back wall, a pair of spaced inner edgewise aligned front wall members merging into said side walls engageable between the matches and said back wall for removably coupling said body to the match folder, an extension depending from said rear wall and a V-shaped bottom structure including a rear portion depending from the lower end of said extension and an upstanding front portion engageable with the rear face of the lower part of the back wall of the match folder.

As a new article of manufacture, an open top receptacle for removably coupling to a match package having a back wall, said receptacle coinprising a rear wall for opposing said back wall, a pair of side walls for spacing said rear wall from said back wall, a pair of spaced inner edgewise aligned front wall members merging into said side walls engageable between the matches and said back Wall for removably coupling said body to the match folder, an extension depending from said rear wall and a V-shaped bottom structure including a rear portion depending from the lower end of said extension and an upstanding front portion engageable with the rear face of the lower part of the back wall of the match folder, the lower end of the said side walls and the said front wall members being spaced from and disposed above the front portion of said bottom structure.

As a new article of manufacture, an open top receptacle for removably coupling to a match package having a back wall, said receptacle comprising a rear wall for opposing said back wall, a pair of side walls for spacing said rear wall from said back wall, a pair of spaced inner edgewise aligned front wall members merging into said side walls engageable between the matches and said back wall for removably coupling said body to the match folder, an extension depending from said rear wall and a V-shaped bottom structure including a rear portion depending from the lower end of said extension and an upstanding front portion engageable with the rear face of the lower part of the back wall of the match folder, and an abrasive on the lower portion of the outer face of said rear wall.

4. As a new article of manufacture, an open top receptacle for removably mounting on a match package having a back wall, said receptacle comprising a pair of side walls, a rear wall forming means of greater length than said side walls, a pair of oppositely disposed inner edgewise aligned spaced front wall forming members of less length than said means engageable between the matches and said back wall for removably coupling the receptacle to the match folder and a V-shaped bottom including a rear portion depending from the Alower end of said means and an upstanding front portion engageable with the lower part of the rear face of said back wall.
