To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, GUsTAvE C. Brown, a citizen of the United Bridgeport, county of Fairfleld, State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Match-Safes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in match safes and has particular reference to an improved combined match box holder and ash or match stub receiver.

A further object is to provide a match safe so constructed that the match igniting material usually provided on the boxes may be conveniently utilized.

Other objects will be obvious from the drawings and the description following. The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of parts and in the unique relations of the various members all as more completely outlined hereinafter and illustrated in the ac companying drawings, wherein a Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved match safe, the cover being lifted to show the box of matches therein;

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an ordinary match box, the cover having been detached and slightly removed.

In said drawings the numeral 4: designates the usual match receiving slide contained in an open ended box comprising the top 5, bottom 6 and sides 7, as shown. Such boxes are usually provided on their sides with igs niting material 8 consisting of an abrasive, or abrasive material combined with suitable chemicals, for igniting the matches.

The match safe itself is conveniently made of sheet metal and consists of the back 9, the sides 11, the front 12 and bottom 13, the back being provided with holes 10 for receiving supporting nails or the like. The safe also has a false bottom it. The back, sides and bottom are preferably formed from a single piece of sheet metal and the front and false bottom formed of another piece. Adjacent edges are fastened together in any suitable way as by soldering, brazing or welding and the false bottom is preferably secured to the back by an integral tongue 14: passing through slits in the back.

Before inserting the match box the top 5 is cut or torn off and discarded. In this way the matches are exposed while the igniting material on the box is retained.

The cover 16 hinged as at 17 protects the matches against dust and moisture and is provided with a rolled over front edge ex tending beyond the front 12 for convenience in lifting the cover.

Between the false bottom 14L and the bottom 13 and resting on the latter I have provided a drawer for receiving ashes and match stubs. This drawer comprises sides 18, bottom 19, rear wall 20, and the inclined front wall 21. It will be seen that the drawer is always open for receiving ashes, match stubs, etc., and that it can be readily withdrawn for emptying. The front edge is roughened or provided with an abrasive coating as at 22 to serve as an additional scratching surface.

It will be seen therefore that I have provided a device which fulfils the objects primarily stated and while I have shown a single embodiment of my invention, it is clear that other forms thereof may readily be provided without departing from my indefined in the following claim.

As an article of manufacture, a match safe formed of two sections and comprising a sheet metal body having a plane back wall, a bottom bent at a right an le thereon and extending laterally therefrom, side walls bent at right angles on said back and extending laterally above and adapted to be secured to the bottom to form a receptacle, a right angled metal strip having a tongue on one portion thereof adapted to be projected through the back wall and turned to secure said strip in spaced relation above the bottom, the other portion of said strip acting as a front wall for the safe and apertured to permit access to the scratch surface of a match box supported by the strip, the portion of the receptacle between said bottom and strip adapted to contain an ash receiver therein.
