J. HINTON.
Curtain Fixtures. No. 230,416; Patented July 27,1880.
@itmssrs nbmtur ATTOKN EY N.PETERS, FHOTO-Lrfi-IOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFEIc JAMES HINTON, OF LEICESTER, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO LLOYD, SUPPLEE 82; WALTON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
CURTAIN-FIXTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 230,416, dated July 27, 1880. application filed May 19, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES HINTON, of Leicester, in the county of Leicestershire, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shade-Fixtures, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the fixture embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section in line :0 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
Shades have been provided with weights, weighted tassels, brake mechanism, winding and unwinding cords, and other devices to balance the same and limit the rotation of the rollers; but such devices are somewhat complicated and expensive, and this my invention is designed to remedy.
This invention relates to window-shades in i which weighted brake -'cords are employed; and it consists in a combination of aweighted brake-cord with an independent winding-cord, and also in the combination of the foregoing with a guide arranged below the roller, substantially as set forth.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a shade or hanging for windows, doors, and other purposes. i
B represents the roller, having journals to a, which are mounted on brackets B B, secured to the frame-work of the window or door in well-known manner.
One end of the roller is grooved, as at b, or 3 5 provided with a flanged pulley, around which the cord O is wound, and the other end is grooved, as at d, or provided with a flanged pulley, around which is passed a brake-cord, D, the upper end of which is secured by an 40 eye, 0, or other fastening, to the frame-work above or behind the roller, or to the bracket B, and the portion below the roller hangs freely, and is weighted or carries a weighted tassel, f, the cord being partially but directly in contact with the roller or pulley, or passed once around the same. i
The cord 0 is so disposed on the roller or pulley that when the shade runs down it will be wound up thereon, and by pulling the cord quently the shade unrolls and descends, and
when it is at the proper height the said cord D is let go, whereby by its weight it bears on the roller, the resultant friction whereof prevents movement of the roller, and consequently of the shade.
When the shade is to raised, the cord 0 is drawn down, thus rotating the roller and winding the shade, and when sufficiently high the weighted cord D exerts its friction on the roller, the result whereof is evident. V
It will thus be seen that the shade may be readily operated and controlled, the means employed being simple, cheap, and easily applied. I
A loop or eye, 9, may be applied to the frame-work or bracket to serve as a guide for the cord D.
.If desired, both cords, (J D, may be located side by side at the same end of the roller.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with winding-cord G, the which operates to raise the curtain or shade A, the brake-cord D, independentof said winding-cord, and operating to prevent the shade from falling, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of winding cord G, independent weighted cord-brake D, and guide g, arranged under roller 13, substantially as and 0 for the purpose set forth.
JAMES HINTON.
