This invention relates generally to women's garments used for; providing support for the breasts and particularly to garments known as brassieres. v i

Various-types of brassieres have been provided embodying some form of adjustment means independent of the shoulder straps for raising the breast pockets to produce uplift and effect spacing of the breasts. The disadvantages of such brassieres with which I am familiar are that they ordinarily embody a plurality of straps and thus require several adjustments in order to achieve the desired effect. It is also true that generally theadjustment means itself is difficult to quickly manipulate.

It therefore is a primary object of this invention to provide anew and improved brassiere of simple construction embodying a single easily manipulated adjustment means associated withthe breast pockets of the brassiere for varying the uplift action of the pockets on the breasts of a wearer and for varying the spacing. In this connection it is an object to provide a garment embodying a single adjustment strapwhich is attached to each breast pocket at its ends and adapted to be detachably secured at various heights near its center along themedial line of the garment intermediate the. breast pockets. It is also an object to provide an adjustment strap means of the type indicated which embodies elastic qualities.

It is a further object of this invention to provide aconstruction of the type indicated which may be embodied in garments other than brassires such, for example, as bathing suits or the like to enable the wearer to adjust the breast receiving pocket portions of such garments.

These and other objects will be apparent from the drawing and the following description thereof. Referring to the drawing which is for illustrative purposes only;

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the front and one side of a brassiere embodying the invention shown on a portion of the body of a wearer;

Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the outside of an extended garment; and

Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

More particularly describing the invention, reference numeral ll generally indicates the front portion of a brassiere embodying the invention. The front portion of the brassiere includes a pair of breast pockets l2 which are formed of any suitable material. The material forming these pockets may be provided with suitable darts I l3--l3' which give the desired shape to the breast pockets. A band portion II is provided extending beneath the pockets and to the opposite margins thereof. This band is stitched to the pockets as indicated in broken lines. In this connection in the drawing broken or dotted lines have been used to indicate stitching.

A band I5 is attached to each pocket and to the ends of the band portion l4. One of these bands I5 is provided with an elastic extension It terminating in a strip of material I! provided with suitable eyelets l8. The other band is provided with a short elastic strip I9 and a hook 20. The bands l5 and strips l6, l8 and 20 are adapted to extend around the body of the wearer for adjustably securing the brassiere to the. wearer. A pair of shoulder straps 22 are provided each of which is secured at one end to the top of a breast-pocket at 23 and extends to one of the bands 15 at 2 4.

It is a particular object of the invention to provide means whereby the breast pockets may be adjusted independently of the shoulder straps and the band portion encircling the body of the wearer and to accomplish this a pocket adjustment strap 25 is provided. The ends of this strap are attached to the respective breast pockets below the centers of said pockets at about the middle thereof in the region 26. Intermediate its ends the adjustment strap is provided with a hook 21 which is adapted to be detachably secured to any of a number of vertically arranged eyelets 28 secured to a strip of fabric 29 extending along the medial line of the garment and intermediate the two breast. pockets l2. The breast pockets are each preferably provided with a reinforcement strip as the strips 30 which in eifect form continuations of the strip 25 at each end thereof. These strips extend from the ends of the adjustment strap to the opposite lateral margins of the breast pockets and are secured to the breast pockets along their entire margilns and at their inner ends to the adjustment s ap.

Preferably the adjustment strap itself is formed in part of an elastic material and in the form of the invention shown this elastic material comprises the two elastic strips 3l, the central portion 32 of the adjustment strap being formed of any suitable flexible, but non-elastic, material.

With the construction shown the wearer after adjusting the shoulder straps and the band encircling portions, may then manipulate the pocket adjustment strap 25 to secure the desired uplift and spacing of the breasts. The only manipulation' necessary is the hooking of the strap into the desired eyelet. When the strap is mounted with the hook 1n the lowest eyelet 28, the strap is effective to exert only a slight yieldable pulling force on the breast pockets. If the strap is hooked higher the strap is effective to more firmly pull and engage the lower portion of the breast pockets, thereby effecting an uplift action and a slight separation of the breasts contained within the pockets. An extreme uplift can be achieved by fastening the adjustment strap in the uppermost eyelet.

Although the invention has been shown and described with particular reference to a brassiere, it is contemplated that the invention can be embodiedin other garments as, for example, a bathing suit, in which case it would be desirable to place the adjustment strap and eyelets on the inside of the garment rather than on the outside as shown and described.

It is also contemplated that various other changes and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the invention and it is intended to cover such changes as come within the claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. In a brassiere, breast pockets, band means extending from said pockets and adapted to be secured around a wearer, a breast pocket adjustment strap attached at each end to said brassiere below the center of the breast'pockets and means for detachably securing said strap at its center to said brassiere at various heights intermediate said pockets along the medial line of the brassiere.

2. In a brassire, a pair of breast pockets, band means extending from opposite sides of said pockets and adapted to extend around the body of a wearer, a shoulder strap extending from each pocket and attached to said band means, an adjustment strap attached at each end to the respective pockets, said points of attachment being intermediate the sides of said pockets and below the center thereof, and means for detachably securing said strap at a point intermediate its ends at various heights intermediate said pockets along the medial line of said brassiere.

In a brassiere, a pair of breast pockets, band means extending from opposite sides of said pockets and adapted to extend around the body of a wearer, a shoulder strap extending from each pocket and attached to said band means, an adjustment strap attached at each end to the respective pockets, said points of attachment being intermediate the sides of said pockets and below the center thereof, and means for dethe respective pockets, said points of attachment 4 being intermediate the sides of said pockets and below the centers thereof, a hook intermediate the ends of said adjustment strap, and means extending along the medial line of the brassiere intermediate the pockets providing a plurality of eyes for receiving said hook whereby said adjustment strap may be detachably secured at various heights.

5. In a brassiere, a pair of breast pockets, band means extending from opposite sides of said pockets and adapted to extend around the body of a wearer, a shoulder strap extending from each pocket and attached to said band means, an adjustment strap attached at each end to the respective pockets, said points of attachment being intermediate the sides of said pockets and below the centers thereof, a hook intermediate the ends of said adjustment strap, and means extending along the medial line of the brassiere intermediate the pockets providing a plurality of eyes for receiving said hook whereby said adjustment strap may be detachably secured at various heights, said adjustment strap extending diagonally upward from each end to the region of the hook intermediate the ends thereof.

6. In a brassiere, a pair of breast pockets, band means extending from opposite sides of said pockets and adapted to extend around the body of a wearer, a shoulder strap extending trom each pocket and attached to said band means, an adjustment strap attached at each end to the respective pockets, said points of attachment being intermediate the sides of said pockets and below the centers thereof, a hook intermediate the ends of said adjustment strap, means extending along the medial line of the brassiere intermediate the pockets providing a plurality of eyes for receiving said hook whereby said adjustment strap may be detachably secured at various heights, and a pair of reinforcement strips each secured along its margins to the respective pockets and extending from the respec- ALBERT A.
