UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. B. MURRAY AND CALEB J. BAKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FOLDING COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 228,775, dated June 15, 1880.
Application filed March 12, 1880. No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, THOMAS W. B. MUR- RAY and CALEB J. BAKER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the cot ex tended. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-section taken through the pillow or head-rest.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to folding cots or camp-beds and it consists, essentially, in the improved construction of the head-rest for the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A A represent the side slats constituting the frame of the cot, which are provided with legs or supports B B, pivoted together, so as to permit the side slats of the frame, which are connected by a canvas covering, (3, to be extended or folded at will. Suitable bracesD D connect the side slats, A A, with the legs B B.
At one end the cot is provided with a headrest, E, formed by two elliptical springs, F F,
sewed or otherwise secured upon the covering G at one end of the cot.
At the head end the covering 0 is folded over the elliptical springs F F, sewed or secured thereto at suitable intervals and tacked or otherwise secured to the side slats, A, thus forming an elastic and com fortable rest to support the head of the occupant of the cot.
By this invention a simple and comfortable head-rest for folding-cots is supplied at a nominal cost; and it will be observed that the springs constituting the support of the headrest fold together when the cot is folded, thus occupying but little space.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A head-rest for folding cots, consisting of two elliptical springs arranged upon the flexible covering closely adjoining the side rails of such cot, and covered by an extension of the flexible covering, to which said springs are secured at suitable intervals, the edges of said flexible extension being secured to the side rails to prevent displacement, as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. B. MURRAY. CALEB J. BAKER.
