(o1. .t5- 17) Y 1 Claim.
'I'his invention relates to a device for demonstrating the efficiency of vaginal diaphragms and relates more particularly to a device for demonstrating diaphragms of the type shown in prior United States Patents Nos. 2,234,494 and 2,234,495.
It is essential that such diaphragms be constructed so that they will automatically deform themselves when in place in the vagina with an upward arc at the front and back so that their entire periphery will contact and follow the inner walls of the vagina.
The principal object of this invention is to providea device of this `character in which the diaphragm will be completely enclosed as it would be in the human vagina and yet in which it will be possible to see whether the diaphragms are properly constructed and whether they contact the internal wall at all points in the periph- In the following detailed description of the I invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing which `forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the improved diaphragm demonstrating device;
Fig. 2 is a front view thereof; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail section illustrating the handle attachment; and
Fig. 4 is a detail View illustrating a type of diaphragm which the device is designed to demonstrate. v
The improved diaphragm demonstrator is exceedingly simple in construction and consists of rounded bead I3. The tube is designed to represent a distended normal vagina.
Within the tube a projecting member I4 isV the'projecting member and through the hole a cylindrical tube Ill, preferably formed of a transparent plastic such as lurnarith tube, however; could be manufactured from any suitable transparent substance such as glass if desired.
The tube has an open mouth I I and a rounded closed inner end I2. The open extremity is preferably, but not necessarily, surrounded by a The into a handle I'G by means of which the entire. device may be supported. Y
During a demonstration a vaginal diaphragm, such as indicated at il in Fig. 3, is compressed and inserted into the tube II) either with the linger or by the use of any suitable diaphragm` inserter, The insertion is continued until the inner edge of the diaphragm passes beneath the projecting member I Li. The diaphragm is then released and the natural elasticity of the rim thereof will cause it to assume a position beneath the member I4. If the diaphragm has been properly manufactured it will automatically assume an upward arc, such as shown in broken line in Fig. 1, about the protruding member I4.
Since the tube is transparent, it is possible to closely examine the rim Contact thereof to ascertain whether it has formed a perfect seal with the tube member ID.
While a specic form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claim,-V
without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
A demonstrating device for vaginal diaphragms comprising: ,a straight, smooth, cylindrical tube of transparent material open at one extremity; a rounded end closing the other extremity of 1 said tube; a rounded peripheral bead surrounding the open extremity of said tube; a protuberance secured against the inner wall of said tube adjacent the rounded extremity and projecting toward the axis of said tube; and a handle member extending from `a point on the exterior of said tube adjacent said protuberance outwardly on an incline toward `the rounded end of said tube.
