Patented Nov. 18, 1941 PICKUP DEVICE FOR PILES George A. McCammon, La Salina, Venezuela, as-
signor to Standard Oil Development Company, a corporation of Delaware Application August 31, 1939, Serial No. 292,806
2 Claims.
The present invention is directed to a pickup device for piles, particularly concrete piles.
The principal object of the present invention is the provision of a device which can be attached to a lifting cable so as to make possible the picking up of concrete piles and the disengagement of the liftin cable from the pile after the pile is set in place.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will appear from the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lifting device of the present invention in engagement with a pile; and
Figure 2 is a cross section of Figure 1 along the line AA.
Referring to the drawing in detail, numeral 1 designates a concrete pile provided with a transverse bore 2 lined with a pipe 3. This pipe is set in place when the pile is cast and is provided particularly for the use of the pickup device of the present invention.
The pickup device of the present invention comprises a roller 4 adapted to slide through pipe 3 having at each end a section 5 of reduced diameter followed by a flange 6. At one of its ends a rope I is anchored in place so that the roller can be recovered after the pile is in place and the pickup device has been disengaged therefrom.
To cooperate with the roller 5 a pair of fiat bars 8 is provided, each of which has at one end an eye 9 adapted to receive a lifting cable H] which may be a length of cable formed in a loop the ends of which are fastened together by a clamp II and to which is attached the main length of cable l2, or which may be two separate lengths of cable attached to the main cable with a Y-connection. The other end of each bar has a broadened section [3 in which is a slot having a lower end l4 of a width slightly greater than the outside diameter of the reduced section 5 of roller 4, and an upper end l5 of a width greater than the outside diameter of the flange B on roller 4. The outer face of the lower end of each bar is provided with a raised section l6 of a thickness such as to fill the space between the flange 6 and the body of roller 4. The upper edge of this thickened section is rounded as shown at I! so as to facilitate the entry of this thickened section into the space designated. On its inner face, at a point beginning intermediate the ends of the enlarged portion l5 of the slot, each bar is provided with a raised surface I8 the ends of which are also rounded as shown. The purpose of this thickened section is to assist in the disengagement of the bars 8 from the roller 4 when by manipulation of the lifting line the bars 8 are caused to slide down relative to roller .4.
In use, the bars are attached to the roller as shown, and the pile lifted and set in place. Then the lifting cable is suddenly slackened, thereby causing the bars to slide over the reduced section of roller 4. When this happens, the wide portion l5 of the slot is thrust over the flange 6 and the bars are disengaged from the roller which may be separately recovered as already-indicated.
It will be understood that the present invention may be modified in various ways without departing from its scope which is defined in the appended claims, which are intended to be drawn as broadly as the prior art permits.
What is claimed is:
1. A lifting device for a pile or beam comprising a rod member adapted to pass through the pile and protrude beyond the sides thereof and having a section of reduced diameter on each of its protruding ends in combination with a pair of arms adapted to be carried by a lifting cable, each of said arms being provided with a longitudinal slot having at its lower end a section of narrow width corresponding to the diameter of the reduced section of said rod and at its upper end a section of greater width than the diameter of the ends of said rods and with a raised portion arranged to be in contact with said pile adjacent the upper end of said slot.
2. A lifting device for a pile or beam comprising a rod member adapted to pass through the pile and protruding beyond the sides thereof, having a groove on each of its protruding ends in combination with a pair of arms, each of said arms having one end provided with a first opening at its other end provided with a longitudinal slot having at its lower end a section of narrow width corresponding to the diameter of the grooved sections of said rod and at its upper end a section of greaterwidth than the diameter of the end of said rod, a raised portion on one side of each of said arms adjacent the upper ends of said slots, said pair of arms having a cable passed through said first openings and formed into a loop for suspending said arms.
