Abstract

Grips, sliding wedge and roller type.-In a gripping device for a rope, cable, or rod of the kind in which a spring- controlled flange forces metal balls along a conical surface into engagement with the rope, the balls 9 are lodged freely between the flange 8 and the cone 2 and are of such size that they cannot escape throught the opening provided in the cone and flange for the passage of the rope. The gripping device is shown in Fig. 4 applied to the guide 16 of a lift and acting as a safety suspension device when the hoisting cable breaks. A bent lever 13 pivoted to the top of the lift has one end attached to the hoisting cable and the other end formed as a hook 15 which engages a groove formed in the flange 8. A spring 13<1> pulls down the upper end of the lever 13 when the cable breaks and releases the flange 8. A double-acting gripping device for a metal bar 18 is shown in Fig. 5. The flanges 8<11>, 8<111> are controlled by pivotally-connected extensions 17.
