My present invention relates to a fan construction for electric air circulating fans and the like, having certain improvements effective to cause the motor to run considerably cooler than with the usual type of fan.
One object of the invention is to provide'sucb Another object is toiprovide a. fan elementhaving propeller blades and a blower element consisting of a' disc with blower blades formed therefrom and both the fan element and blower element being assembled on a hub that secures the two together and that mounts them on the shaft of the motor.. v
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, 4 pointed out in my claims and, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure l is a rear elevation of a fan construction embodying my invention, the shaft on which the fan is mounted being shown in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure l and showing the fan mounted on a motor shaft, the shaft being illustrated in vertical position, although the fan may be used in either this position or in the usual position with the shaft substantially horizontal. v
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the blower element of my fan construction.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 1, showing a slightly modified construction.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line,5--5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is another view similar to Figure 1, showing a further modified construction.
Figure 7 is a sectional view on the line 1-1 of Figure 6. a
On the accompanying drawings I have used the reference character F to indicate a fan element and B a blower element. The fan element F consists of a central disc-like portion l0 which thereon. The free edgeof the flange l2 terminates in a plurality of propeller blades I3.
The blower element B consists of a disc ll slightly smaller than the dished portion HI andlocated within the flange H. The disc I 4 has a plurality of blower blades l5 formed by cutting the disc as indicated at l6, and bending each cut-out portion to a position at substantially right angles to the plane of the disc.
The fan and blower elements F and B are assembled on a hub l1 against a shoulder it thereof after which the end of thehub is peened over as at I! to retain the elements F, B and H in assembled relation to each other.
The hub I1 is adapted for mounting on a motor shaft 20 and may be secured thereto as by a set screw 2|. motor M, the housing of which may be provided with air circulating openings 22.
In Figure 4, I show a modified construction wherein the fan element is indicated as F and the blower element as B The numbered elements are similar to Figures 1, 2 and 3, and accordingly bear the same reference numerals with the addition or a.
It will be noted that there are more of the blower blades I5 and that they are somewhat smaller in area. when compared with Figure 1. Such a change is made so as to design the blower element B for a higher speed of rotation and a propeller blade IQ of less pitch.
In Figures 6 and 7 I show a modified construction wherein there are fan elements l0", II and H mounted on a hub ll The fan elements Il and I 4" are of sheet metal construction and the element l0 is slotted as at 23 to receive the propeller blade Il The propeller blade is formed of rubber so that it will bend when striking an object without damaging such object.
In the form of invention shown in Figures 6 and 7 the blower blades l5 are cut out as indicated at l6 directly from the fan element N and bent to a position at substantially right angles to the plane of the disc-like fan element is dished by providing an annular flange I2 Practical operation In the operation of my fan construction the blower blades l3 circulate air as indicated by the arrows 24 in Figure 2. The direction of circulation is substantially parallel to the axis of rotation of the shaft 20.
The blower blades I5 draw air from the motor M as through openings 22 as indicated by the arrows 25. Due to centrifugal action the blades l5 create a substantial vacuum adjacent the hub The shaft "extends from a ture as an air circulating means is not many way reduced by my construction.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my invention, and it is my intention to ture, or use of mechanical equivalents, which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention: 4 1. In a fan construction, a '"sheet metal fan element having a central, forwardly embossed part, a shaft for said fan element, said fan element having propeller blades for circulating air substantially longitudinally of said shaft, a motor for rotating said shaft and means for drawing air through said motor to cool the same comprising. a central imperforate disc portion of said fan element having blower type blades partially counter sunk in said embossed part and effective to circulate air from adjacent said shaft outwardly beyond the periphery of said embossed part to mixwith the vair stream through .the
, propeller blades.
' 2. In a fan construction' of the character disclosed, a shaft, a hub element thereon, a tan element comprising a central dished portion and propeller blades projecting from the periphery thereof for circulating air substantially longitudinally of said shaft, a motor for rotating said shaft and means for drawing air through said motor to cool the same comprising a blower ele- .cover by my claims any modified forms of strucment including a bladed disc element adjacent said dished portion of said fan element, said disc element to serve as a blower to efl'ect movement of air outwardly from said shaft to mix with the air stream through said propeller 'blades, said fan element and said disc element being mounted against a shouldered portion of said'hub element and the end of said hub element being peened over said fan and disc elements to retain them assembled with relation to said hub element.

In a fan construction of the character described, a shait, a fan element thereon comprising a central dished portion and propeller blades projecting from the periphery thereof for circulating air substantially longitudinally of said shaft, 9. motor forrotating said shaft and means for drawing air through said motor to cool the same comprising a blower element located in said dished portion of said fan element, said. blowerelement effecting movement of air outwardly from said shaft to mix; with the air stream through said propeller blades, a hub on said shaft, said fan and blower elements being mounted against a shouldered portion thereof and the end of said hub element being peened over said elements to retain them assembled with relation to said hub.
