Description

A. T. THOMPSON RECEPTACLE CLOSURE 'Filed Oct. 26, 1937 awe/rm 0777] Patented Oct. 7, 1941 UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE RECEPTACLE "CLO SURE- Albert '1. Thompson, New Orleans, Application October 26, 1937, Serial No. 171,151
1 Claim.
The invention relates to receptacle closures of the type wherein the closure is disposed within the"- chamber of the receptacle and adapted to close a filling opening, and has for its object to provide means whereby, when the closure is forced to closed position against a gasket on the inside of the receptacle around the filling opening, a leakproof connection is formed.
A further object is to provide cooperating holding means for the closure carried by the closure and receptacle, whereby, -when the closure is forced to closed position by a vigorous pull thereon, the gasket will be compressed and. the closure held in closed position by spring engaging means.
A further object is to provide the closure with a plurality of arms adapted to be received between U-shaped spring holding members carried by the receptacle.
A further object is to provide spring snap elements, carried by the receptacle, and adapted to be received in recesses in the closure, preferably spherically shaped for holding the closure in closed position.
A further object is to provide the closure with a headed extension on which a holding bar is pivotally mounted, and bayonet slots in the wall of the filling opening for receiving the ends of the bar, and holding the closure in closed position with the gasket compressed.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the receptacle.
Figure 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the lower end of the receptacle.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view in elevation of another form of receptacle. 7
Figure 5 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the lower end of the receptacle shown in Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 6--6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a detail collective sectional view of a portion of the closure and a portion of the bottom of the receptacle, showing the parts in position for assembly.
Figure 8 is a view in elevation of another form of the invention, showing the receptacle.
Figure 9 is a vertical transverse sectional view through the lower end of the receptacle, shown in Figure 8.
Figure 10 is a bottom plan view of the receptacle.
Figure 11 is a detail perspective View of one side of the filling opening, showing the bayonet slot therein.
Referring to the drawing and particularly to Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, the numeral l designates the receptacle and 2 the bottom thereof and 3 a relatively large filling opening in the bottom 2.
Disposed within the chamber 4 of the receptacle is a closure 5, which may be of the captive or noncaptive type, and which closure is provided with a threaded tool receiving aperture 6, in which a tool, for instance a bolt is placed for snapping the closure to closed position. The closure 5 is provided with outwardly extending lugs 1, which are received and held between the spring arms 8, arranged in pairs around the filling opening. When the closure is snapped to closed position, it compresses a gasket 9 around the filling opening and forms a leakproof connection. When the operator desires to fill the receptacle, a vigorous push inwardly is imparted on the closure 5, thereby releasing the same from between the spring arms 8, and the receptacle can be cleaned, sterilized and refilled. It will be noted that when the closure is in closed position, the spring arms 8, which flare outwardly at their upper ends, will grip opposite sides of the members I, and hold the gasket compressed.
Referring to Figures 4 to 7 inclusive wherein a modified form is shown, in this form the closure 50. is provided with spherically shaped apertures In, which receive the headed snap members II carried by the bottom 2, and which spring snap members are spherically shaped and provided with threaded portions I2, threaded into the inner side of the bottom 2. It will be seen that when a tool is threaded into the aperture 6, and the closure 5a snapped to position over the filling opening 3, the snap heads II will be compressed and will enter the apertures l0, and will expand therein at the same time the gasket 9 is compressed, hence it will be seen that a leakproof connection will be formed around the filling opening; otherwise the operation and construction is the same as shown in Figure 2.
Referring to the modified form shown in Figures 8 to 11, in this form the closure 5b is provided with a headed extension I3, which extends through the filling opening 3 and has pivoted thereon a cross bar I4, the ends of which are received in the portions l5 of the bayonet slots when the closure is moved to closed position, and when the gasket 9 is compressed, the pivoted bar is rotated, and the ends will move into the horizontal portions [6 of the bayonet slots, thereby holding the closure in closed position.
From the above it will be seen that closures of the internal type are provided for receptacles which may be easily and quickly snapped into closed or open position, and when in closed position do not depend upon internal pressure to form a leakproof connection. It is to be understood the closures may be used in connection with pressure receptacles.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
The combination with a receptacle bottom, a closure within the receptacle chamber and over a filling opening in said bottom, of means for holding said closure in closed position, said means comprising a headed extension carried by the closure and extending into the opening, a locking bar pivotally mounted on the headed extension, bayonet slots carried in the wall of the filling opening and adapted to receive and hold the closure in closed position, the entrance passage of the bayonet slot being inwardly disposed, said headed member and locking bar being en- 15 tirely disposed within said opening.
