UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM C. BEATTIE, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO REED & BARTON, OF SAME PLACE.
J EWEL-CAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,787, dated March 23, 1880.
Application filed October 16, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM C. BEATTIE, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jewel-Cases, Stands, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanyin g drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the'jewel-case when closed, with the sleeves broken out to show the hinging of the drawers upon the vertical standards. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the case when opened.
This invention relates to certain improvements in jewel-cases and analogous articles; and it consists in a stand or case having a stationary bottom portion, a stationary and elevated top or cover, and two standards connecting the said top and bottom portion and forming a handle, in combination with one or more receptacles hinged upon the said standards and folding horizontally between the stationary top and bottom portions, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings is represented a jewel-case, in which A represents the bottom portion, which is stationary, and made in the form of a receptacle, supported upon suitable feet a, and from which receptacle there rise the vertical standards B B, arranged on opposite sides, and. joined at the top to form an ornamental handle, O, by which the case is transported.
D D are the movable drawers or cups of the case, which are hinged to the standards 13 so as to swing horizontally by being fastened at different elevations to sleeves b b, which encompass the said standards.
E is the stationary cover to the series of receptacles, which is suitably fastened to the two standards in elevated position. All of these receptacles, as well as the upper surface of the stationary cover E, are suitably lined with satin, silk, or other fancy cloth, or are otherwise finished inside.
When the drawers or receptacles are folded they rest between thelower receptacle, A, and the stationary cover E, in which relation they form reciprocally a cover and a support for each other, and when opened presenta wellbalanced and symmetrical appearance.
In the upper portion of the handle is formed a bouquetholder, c, and just beneath it is attached a hook, (1. Upon this hook a watch may be hung with the chain resting upon the cushioned upper surface of the cover E, while the diiferent receptacles A D D furnish separate accommodations for the bracelets, necklace, earrings, breastpin, and rings.
To determine the registration of the drawers when in closed position, stop-knobs d on the drawers are made to strike against the ver tical standards, while additional knobs e serve as handles for opening the drawers.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- A jewel case or stand consisting of a fixed bottom portion, a fixed elevated cover, a pair of standards connecting the said bottom portion and cover and forming a handle, and one or more receptacles hinged upon the said standards and folding thereupon horizontally between the said bottom portion and cover, substantially as shown and described.
WILLIAM C. BEATTIE.
