NITED STATES PATENT Grrron.
MARCUS A. ADLER, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY-POCKET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 225,038, dated March 2, 1880.
Application filed October 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARCUS A. ADLER, of
the citv, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety-Pockets, which invention is fully described in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of a pocket embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a like view thereof with portion of the outer compartment safety-pocket composedof three parallel layers of fabric united and forming ari'inner compartment and an outer compartment having its upper horizontal edge disconnected to form a month, said compartments being separated from each other bytheintermediate layer, which is attachedrat all of its edges to the garment sides to form and forms a partition extending vertically from the lower to the upper ends of the pocket, and which is providedwith a vertical central slit entirely-below and extending at right angles to the mouth of the outer compartment, the layer of fabric forming the latter serving to entirely oover and conceal said central-vertical slit, the object of such peculiar construction and arrangement of parts being to provide a pocket having an inner compartment, which is only accessible through the horizontal mouth of the outer compartment, and whereby the surreptitious abstraction of articles from the inner compartment is prevented.
In the drawings, the letter A designates the mouth or opening to the outer or introductory compartment, and 'B the vertical entrance-slit to the inner or safety compartment of my pocket.
Iusually layers of fabric that is to say, I join two of the layers on all the safety-compartment, but
leave the third layer (marked E, and which construct the whole pocket ofthree joined by stitches, as at D' forms the outer compartment) disconnected on one side, its disconnected side constitntin g the opening A.
The vertical slit B is formed in the middle or partition layer of fabric centrally to the pocket, and terminates below the opening A namely, below the top edge of the pocketand it is preferably re-enforced at each end by stitches O.
In applying the pocket to a garment I fasten the same in such a manner as to leave the opening A exposed. Then, when the pocket is put to use, the article-as a watchis first placed into the outer compartment through the opening A, and thence passed through the slit B into the inner or safety compartment, where is secure against theft, as the wearer at once becomes cognizant of an attempt to reach the safety-compartment.
When the pocket is used for carrying a watch, the eye of the latter may project through the'vertical slit B, but is checked by the end thereof, so that it cannot be snatched out hastily, it being necessary to turn the watch in the pocket to permit its withdrawal. The
watch or other article placed in the safety-- compartment B is also secure against loss by slipping out of the pocket accidentally, inasmuch as the vertical slit B is covered by the outer compartment in any position of the pocket. I e
The inner or safety compartment may be arranged on either side of the outer compartment, and, if desired, two safety-compartments may be used, one on each side of the outer compartment.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to construct a safety-pocket with an inner and an outer compartment; also, that a pocket composed of a single compartment has had the outer layer slitted vertically at the center and provided with a. flap carrying a flat spring,
which bears on the stem of a watch when in place in the broadly, I disclaim.
pocket, and such constructions,
What I claim as new, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A safety-pocket for garments, consisting of three parallel layers of fabric uni ted and forming an inner compartment and an outer compartment having its upper horizontal edge outer compartment, the layer of fabric form- 10 disconnected to form a month, said comparting the latter serving to entirely cover and inents being separated from each other by the conceal said central vertical slit, all as herein intermediate layer, which is attached at all of shown and described. 5 its edges to the garment and forms a partition extending vertically from the lower to the up MARCUS ADLER' per ends of the pocket, and which is provided Witnesses:
with a vertical central slit entirely below and L. D. LONGHI,
extending at right angles to the mouth of the I B. MARKS.
