- This .invention relates to improvements in sportswear, and it is more directly concerned with the outdoormans coat disclosed in the copending application for patent filed by George S. Blagden Jan. 2l, 1939, Serial No. 252,194.
- the general principles of the latter invention are preserved in the instant coat, but now said coat has been simplified' in some of its details, thereby providing at least one additional advantage
- the foregoing principle is briefly stated as comprising the provision in an outdoormans coat for increasing or decreasing the warmth of the garment simply by fully donning the garment as a coat in the first instance, and in the second instance, of particularly folding the coat upon itself so as to lessen its covering area, This provision does not interfere with the fundamental purpose of the coat as an ammunition and game bag.
- Suspenders are carried by the coat, their contiguous ends being attached' to the back portion of the coat, usually at a place well above the waist-line, their remote ends being attached to the side portions of the coat approximately at places at the extremities of the waist-line, said Suspenders avoiding any interference whatsoever with the freedom of use of the coat, but serving the important purpose of suspending the coat from the shoulders of the wearer when said coat has been doubled over or folded in part to reduce its covering area.
- a characteristic of the Suspenders when attached in the manner stated being an arching thereof between the points of attachment, said arching being particularly well suited to the adaptation of the Suspenders to the sides of the body of the wearer when the garment is worn as a full coat, thereby insuring the holding of the Suspenders in place and out of the way, and to minimize the danger of their being caught upon obstructions such as branches, fence-rails and the like.
- buttons on the sleeves and button-holes on the side portions of the coat enable the preliminary hanging up of the sleeves, so to speak, this enabling a better folding in of portions of the garment when the latter is intended to be worn as a half coat.
- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the outdoormans coat.
- Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the coat, showing it stretched out farther than in Fig. 1 and also partially folded so as to identify the garment as 'both a half coat and specifically as a game bag.

- the garment is generally designated I. It comprises a top portion 2 which is surmounted by a collar 3, a back portion 4 and side portions 5, 6.
- a line 'l is indicated in Fig. 1 as comprising the division between the previously mentioned back 4 and the bottom k8 of the coat.
- This line provides a .convenient reference. 1nasmuch as it extends transversely of the garment it is herein desired to be considered as substantially matching the position of the waist-line of the wearer.
- the bottom 8 has the conventional side pockets 9 and a game pocket I0. These pockets stay in approximately the same positions at the wearers sides whether the garment is worn as a coat, or worn folded as a belt game bag that largely encompasses the wearer at the waist, easy and immediate access being had to the openings thereof whether, as stated, the garment is worn as a coat or as a belt game bag. Access to the latter is had through side openings II and it is optional whether the pocket .I 0 is single, that is to say, goes all the way across the bag, or comprises two individual pockets.
- the sleeves I2 extend off from the coat in the customary manner, one of vtheir distinguishing features being Vthat they carry buttons I3 on back. If the sleeves I2 were laid down fiat against the side portions 5, l in Fig. 1, the buttons I3 would be underneath the sleeves and adjacent to what would then be the back edges thereof. These edges are designated I4, but by virtue of the fact that the sleeves I2 are raised in Fig. 1 the .buttons I3 are in the uppermost position, but still on back of the sleeves.
- buttons I5 are intended to be secured in specially positioned and provided lbutton-holes I5. These button-holes have nothing to do with the fastening of the buttons I6 of the coat, other button-holes l1 being provided for that purpose. At this point it is desired to state that the buttons I3 and button-holes I5 are herein referred to for the sleeve fastening means merely from the standpoint of convenience.
- any other equivalent fastening can be used, because the fundamental purpose of any fastening between the extremity of the sleeves and the side portions 5, 6 of the coat is to temporarily anchor said extremities so that the sleeves will not hang loose when the coat is folded in as shown in Fig. 2.

- the previously mentioned button-holes I5, which might well be styled auxiliary button-holes, are formed in the side portions 5, 6 a short distance above the remote suspender ends 2l.
- the Suspenders I8 are fairly loose. This avoids any tendency toward pressing tightly toward the sides of the wearer when the garment is 'worn as a coat. At the same time Said looseness permits the Suspenders to take on the arched shape suggested in Fig. l. UNITED STATES PATENT `OFFICE UTDOORMANS COAT George Samuel Blagden, Memphis, Tenn. Application April 2S, 1939, Serial No. 270,686
Claims.
This .invention relates to improvements in sportswear, and it is more directly concerned with the outdoormans coat disclosed in the copending application for patent filed by George S. Blagden Jan. 2l, 1939, Serial No. 252,194. The general principles of the latter invention are preserved in the instant coat, but now said coat has been simplified' in some of its details, thereby providing at least one additional advantage The foregoing principle is briefly stated as comprising the provision in an outdoormans coat for increasing or decreasing the warmth of the garment simply by fully donning the garment as a coat in the first instance, and in the second instance, of particularly folding the coat upon itself so as to lessen its covering area, This provision does not interfere with the fundamental purpose of the coat as an ammunition and game bag. With these statements in mind, the objects of the invention are as follow:
First, to provide an outdoormans coat wherein a pair of Suspenders is carried by the coat, their contiguous ends being attached' to the back portion of the coat, usually at a place well above the waist-line, their remote ends being attached to the side portions of the coat approximately at places at the extremities of the waist-line, said Suspenders avoiding any interference whatsoever with the freedom of use of the coat, but serving the important purpose of suspending the coat from the shoulders of the wearer when said coat has been doubled over or folded in part to reduce its covering area.
Second, to provide an outdoormans coat of the foregoing description, a characteristic of the Suspenders when attached in the manner stated being an arching thereof between the points of attachment, said arching being particularly well suited to the adaptation of the Suspenders to the sides of the body of the wearer when the garment is worn as a full coat, thereby insuring the holding of the Suspenders in place and out of the way, and to minimize the danger of their being caught upon obstructions such as branches, fence-rails and the like. Third, to provide a coat of the foregoing type wherein specially located buttons on the sleeves and button-holes on the side portions of the coat enable the preliminary hanging up of the sleeves, so to speak, this enabling a better folding in of portions of the garment when the latter is intended to be worn as a half coat.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the outdoormans coat.
Figure 2 is a rear elevation of the coat, showing it stretched out farther than in Fig. 1 and also partially folded so as to identify the garment as 'both a half coat and specifically as a game bag.
Figure 3 is a partial'sectional and elevational view as seen substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The garment is generally designated I. It comprises a top portion 2 which is surmounted by a collar 3, a back portion 4 and side portions 5, 6. A line 'l is indicated in Fig. 1 as comprising the division between the previously mentioned back 4 and the bottom k8 of the coat.
This line provides a .convenient reference. 1nasmuch as it extends transversely of the garment it is herein desired to be considered as substantially matching the position of the waist-line of the wearer. The bottom 8 has the conventional side pockets 9 and a game pocket I0.
The sleeves I2 extend off from the coat in the customary manner, one of vtheir distinguishing features being Vthat they carry buttons I3 on back.
These buttons are intended to be secured in specially positioned and provided lbutton-holes I5.
It would be entirely feasible and within the purview of the invention to substitute these elements with ordinary snap fasteners. By an extension of this principle any other equivalent fastening can be used, because the fundamental purpose of any fastening between the extremity of the sleeves and the side portions 5, 6 of the coat is to temporarily anchor said extremities so that the sleeves will not hang loose when the coat is folded in as shown in Fig. 2.
Before considering the position there Shown, attention is directed to the pair of Suspenders I8. The contiguous ends I9 of the suspendersare secured at to the back portion 4 at places adjacent to the vertical center and at an altitude Well above the transverse or so-called waist-line 1. The remote ends 2| of the Suspenders are Secured at 22 to the side portions 5, and fairly close to the adjacent coat margins. Furthermore, the places of Securement 22 are either directly on the Waist-line 'I or closely adjacent to it. The previously mentioned button-holes I5, which might well be styled auxiliary button-holes, are formed in the side portions 5, 6 a short distance above the remote suspender ends 2l.
The Suspenders I8 are fairly loose. This avoids any tendency toward pressing tightly toward the sides of the wearer when the garment is 'worn as a coat. At the same time Said looseness permits the Suspenders to take on the arched shape suggested in Fig. l. By considering that figure it is readily visualized that the Suspenders will apply themselves to the sides of the wearer whe-n the coat is donned and although the Suspenders lie firmly against the coat at that time yet they will not impart a feeling of tightness as has already been Suggested,
The advantage of mounting the Suspenders in the manner disclosed and of causing them to arch as the result is to insure their being held out of the way with normally no possibility of their catching in obstructions while hunting. When it is desired to reduce the area of the coat because of excess warmth or when it is desired to convert the coat mainly into a game bag, the user has only to secure the buttons I3 in the auxiliary button-holes I5.
This anchors the extremities of the sleeves. The .coat can be held up by means of the suspenders I8 whereupon the top portion 2 and the upper parts of the side portions 5, 6 will naturally fall inwardly into place more or less in the manner shown in Fig. 2. The extremities of the sleeves will lie against the inside of the coat, and in practice more closely than suggested in Fig. 3. The garment is now put on, the resulting half coat (Fig. 2) being Supported from the shoulders of the wearer by Suspenders I8.
In conclusion it is desired to State that the previously described securement of the high back suspender endsl at places adjacent to the Vertical center of the coat is not to be regarded as a rigid limitation. Instead of pairing4 the suspenders as disclosed (Fig, 1) they may be crossed just before they are secured at'2, or -the Suspenders may be kept in the positions shown only spaced further apart at their upper ends before being secured at 20.
I claim:
1, A garment comprising a coat having back and side portions, a pair of Suspenders carried on the outside of the coat in diverging relationship to each other, means attaching the remote ends of the Suspenders to the side portions, and
means attaching the contiguous ends of Said suspenders to the back portion of the coat above a medial line rimning transversely of the coat and in positions substantially centered on said back portion.
2. A garment comprising a coat having back and side portions, pockets carried low on the outside of the coat, a pair of Suspenders carried on the outside of and by the coat, means securing one pair of ends of the Suspenders on the outside of the back of the coat closely to each other relatively high up on the back portion of the coat and in positions approximately in the center of said back portion, and means securing the other pair of suspender ends relatively low on the side portions of the coat and at the Virtual extremities of the waist line of the coat, thereby marking the boundaries of generally transverse lines on which the garment is foldable inwardly, providing for the shoulder support thereof by said Suspenders and easy external access to the pockets.
3. A sleeved coat having back and side .portions, fastening means at the free ends` of the sleeves, a pair of Suspenders carried by the coat, adapted to support the coat from the shoulders of the wearer when portions of the coat are folded in to diminish the covering arearthereof,v Said Suspenders being in downwardlydiverging relationship to each other, means securing the remote ends of the Suspenders to Said Side portions and at the substantial extremities of the waist line, Said side portions having complemental fastening means for the Securement of the sleeves, and means Securing the contiguous ends of the suspenders to the approximate middle of the back portion and in a position above the waist line.
4. A garment comprising a coat having back and side portions, said garment being wearable as a full-length coat or halved by folding on generally transverse lines, pockets carried low on the outside of the coat, a pair of downwardly diverging Suspenders carried by the outsideof the coat and providing for Supporting said coat from the shoulders of a wearerwhen halved by said gen erally transverse folding, means securing the remote ends of the Suspenders to the side portions Substantially at the ends of the Waist line, and other means securing the contiguous ends of the Suspenders to the back portion of vthe coat, the external location of the Suspenders assuring permanent external accessability to the low pockets whether the garment is worn as a full length or half length coat. Y
5, A garment comprising a Sleeved coat, suspenders carried by the coat and'adapted to support the coat from the shoulders of the wearer when portions of the coat above the Suspenders are folded in to diminish the covering area of the coat, said Suspenders having two ends attached to the outside of the back of the coat and two ends attached to the sides of the coat near the extremities of the waist line, thereby making the inward folding of the coat possible when the Suspenders are used, and fasteningV means mutually carried by the garment and the free ends of the sleeves so that said free ends may be temporarily fastened up to the garment and kept from dragging low when the coat iS being Worn in the folded position by the Suspenders.
