Description

R. L. PAIRBANK. Reversible Back for Lounge.
No. 224,082. Patented Feb'. 3,1880.
s Z l- I :gli:
UNITEDV STATES PATENT Ormes.
BOSWELL L. FAIRBANK, OF DEANSVILLE, NEW YORK.
REVERSIBLE BACKS FOR LOUNGES.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 224,082, dated February 3, 1880.
Application led October '1, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, RoswnLL L. FMRBANK, ot' Deansville, in the county of Oneida and State oi New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Reversible Backs for Lounges 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side. elevation oi myinvention. Fig. 2 is atransverse section with back removed. Fig. 8 is a detail view of one of the lockingplates and escutcheons; Fig. 4, a detail view of a modification of the adjustable rods with coupling-nut.
The present invention has relation to lounges or couches; and it consists in the peculiar manner of connecting the backs thereof, whereby they are detachable and reversible from one side of the lounge to the other, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the frame of the lounge, of any suitable form and design, having the usual seat and head-rest; and B represents the back of the lounge, which may also be of any suitable form and design, and, if desired, each end thereof may be a duplicate of the other. This back is made detachable and' connected to the frame A in such a manner as will admit ot' its being readily changed from one side ot' the lounge-frame to the other. To accomplish this result there pass through the sides'oi` the frame A two or more rods, a, provided with screw-threads upon their ends to receive headed screw sleeves or nuts b. Although I have shown this means ot connection, it is evident that the construction of the rods'may be variously modified without departing from my invention, such as having two sections of rods headed upon their outer ends and connecting with a take-up or screw-coupling nut at their inner ends, as illustrated in i Fig. 4, as the purpose is to have a rod with heads upon its outer ends and adapted to slide longitudinally to bring the heads a sufcent distance out from either side of the lounge-frame to connect the back B. This back is provided with holes o, around which are secured escntcheons d, and to the back B or to the escutcheons d are secured, by screws 0r other suitable means, locking-plates c, for securing the back B in place and preventing the same from becoming detached from the rods and nuts a Z1.
The back B may be, it' found desirable, upholstered on both sides, thereby simply chan g ing it from one side to the other without the necessity ot changing or reversing the ends.
When the reversing ot the back is found necessary, the rods, with their headed ends, after the back has been detached, are pushed through so as to have the opposite ends of the rods project beyond the opposite side of the lounge-frame a sufficient distance to adl mit of the openings o being passed over the heads ot' the rods.l The locking plates e are then brought into position, and firmly lock or secure the back against the frame of the lounge, thereby enabling any one to adapt the lounge to be placedin any convenient position inany room. The rods a., bein g screw-threaded upon their ends with a sleeveA or takenp, admit ot' their being adjusted in length to any variation that may occur in upholstering the frame.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The lounge-frame A, having the horizorr tal transversely-adjustable rods, in combination with the detachable and reversible back B and means, substantiallyas described, for connecting said back to either end of the rods, as set forth.
2. The horizontal rods a., transversely-ad justable with relation to the lounge-frame A, in combination with the reversible back B, provided with opening o and locking-plates e, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
BOSIVELL L. FAIRBANK.
