UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD EMERSON AND GIDEON G. VCOOK, OF HUMBOLDT, IOWA.
FOOT-REST FOR ROCKING-CHIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,160, dated. June 26, 1888.
Application led November 16, 1882. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom it may con/cern,
Be it known that we, EDWARD EMERSON and GIDEON G. COOK, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Humboldt, in the county of Humboldt and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot- Rests for Rocking-Chairs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
'exact description of the invention, such as ing a chair with a foot-rest which is mounted on rollers, and which is adjustable longitudinally with regard to the seat, as will be hereinafter more 'fully set forth, and pointed out in' .ing the foot-rest applied to a rocking-chair.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section ofthe connecting-rods, and Figs. 3 and 4 'are perspective views, showing the parts detached.
'A represents the foot-board, which is suitably mounted on rollers or casters, to the under side of-which is secured the lower part of the connecting-rod. The end or lower portion of this connecting-rod B is bent and perforated, through which perforations pass suitable screws, by which it is secured to the under part of the foot-board. To the upper end of this rod, which is composed of half-round metal, are secured two rings, b and b, and it is slotted between these rings, and provided on its und er side with ears c a, by means ofwhich ears a[support is provided for the cam C,
vthe parts.
which is secured tothese downwardly-proj ecting ears by a pivot. This cam C is provided with a handle which projects downwardly toward the rod B, as shown, so that it can be readily grasped when it is desirable to adjust On the portion of th is cam C which projects through the slot c in the connecting- Y rod B is a projecting nib, d, which engages 6o with the depressions e e, formed in the under side of the upper connecting-rod, D. |The upper portion of this connecting-rod D is bent,
so as to form a hook, which engages with a staple which is attached to the central under 6 5 part of the seat of the chair. By means ofthe rings and cam the parts of the connecting-rodV are secured to each other, and when it is desirable to loosen the parts to adjust them it may be accomplished either by drawing the 7o 4parts upon each other or by raising the handle, either operation throwing the cam out of place and within the slotted portion of the j bar B. 1
The parts may be secured to each other by pressing upon the foot-rest when the cam is out of position, which will cause the cam to engage with the depressions in the upper bar. The bent handle, Vwhen the rods are connected with each other, abuts against the rod B and 8c prevents the nib on the cam passing beyond its p1 oper position, which is at right angles with the rod B. If desirable, the parts may be adjusted by hand.
Having thus described our invention, what 8 5 we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A foot-rest attachmentl for rocking-chairs,l consisting of a rod, D, for connection with the chair, having end hook and depressions e e, 9c and rod B, bent at its lower end and secured to the foot-board, and provided on its upper end with vrings b b, embracing the rod D, and lugs a a, slot c, to which is attached the cam C, having nib d, and bent handle, the parts being combined and arranged substantially as shown, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
EDVARD EMERSON. GIDEON G.. COOK.
