Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. NYE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO AMOS COTTING AND JAMES T. WORTHINGTON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-CATCH ES.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 221,092, dated October as, 1879; application filed August 11, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. NYE, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Trunk-Catch, of which the followingis a specification.
- My invention consists in a catch of novel construction, composed of two plates, one of which is adapted to be secured to the body and the other to the lid of a trunk, and both of which are provided near their adjacent edges with projections upon their front faces, and a hasp hinged to one of said plates and provided, independently of its hinge, with a band or yoke adapted to surround and secure together the said projections, whereby any attempt to open the trunk without turning down the hasp will not strain the hinge, but will be resisted by the band or yoke.
In the accompanyingdrawings,Figure 1 represents afront view of my catch in a locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar-view of the catch unlocked and having its parts separated; and Fig. 3 is a section online a; 00, Fig. 1.
Similar lettersof reference designate correspondin g parts in all the figures.
A and B designate two plates, which form parts of my catch, and are adapted to be secured one to the body and the other to the lid of atrunk. They are provided with. holes a for the reception of screws or nails for securing them in place.
C designates a hasp hinged to the plate A between the lugs 12, and adapted, when notin' use, to turn down over the front, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Upon the adjacent edges of the two plates A and B they are provided at their front with projecting lugs c, and the hasp C is provided with a band or yoke, C, adapted to surround or embrace the lugs c c and hold the two plates tightly together. As here represented, the two ]ugs c c are so shaped that when in a locked position, as shown in Fig. 1, they form a circular projection, over which the circular band or yoke C snugly fits. By this band or yoke not only is the lid of a trunk to which the catch is secured held from moving vertically, but also laterally.
The faces of the lugs 0 0 are preferably flush with the face of the hasp, forming a smooth front surface, upon which clothing is not liable to catch.
To insure the plate B meeting the plate A in such a position that the hasp may be adjusted over the lugs o c, the plate B is provided on its under side with a projection or lug, B, made tapering on its sides and snugly fitting in a recess, 6, in the back of the plate A. This recess is closed on three sides, and upon the fourth side is a spring, D, arranged to press upon the lug B and hold it in place, so that the faces of the lugs cc are flush with each other. The spring D is secured to the plate A by a screw, (1, and is made sufficiently long and so shaped'that its other end will press upon the hasp C and serve to hold itin its locked position.
It will be seen that the hinge-pin of the hasp is located near its outer face, so that when the hasp is turned down into the position shown in Fig. 2 the spring is relieved of pressure and will retain its resiliency.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the plates A and B, provided upon their fronts with the projections c c, of the hinged hasp 0, provided, independently of its hinge, with a yoke or band, C, adapted to surround and secure to gether the said projections, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the plate A, having in its upper edge the recess 6, open upon one side, and the hasp C, hinged to said plate, of the plate B, having on its lower edge the projection B, adapted to fit in said recess, and the spring D, one end of which bears upon the hasp and the other end upon the projection B, substantially as specified.
CHARLES H. NYE.

HENRY '1. BROWN, '1. J. KEANE.
