Description

I. WILLIAMS. Locomotive Lamp Case.
Patented Nov: 16, 1858.
N. PETERS. Phoio-Ulhagraphcr. wushin wn. D. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE IRVIN A. WILLIAMS, OF UTICA, NEXV YORK.
LOCOMOTIVE-LAMP CASE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 22,099, dated November 16, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IEVIN A. WILLIAMS, of Ut-ica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Locomotive- Lamp Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the lamp chimney. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line :0 m. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 3 y.
Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part.
The nature of my invention consists in inclosing the flues of locomotive lamp cases by the combination of casings and deflecting caps substantially as hereinafter to be set forth for preventing downward draft.
In the drawings A is the smoke flue made conical at top and surmounted with two concentric caps c c and a double curved deflecting plate a. Exterior to the flue A is the casing B, also conical at top and having the deflecting plate 6 above the open upper extremity. The casing B is surrounded by the exterior casing C, of form similar to casing B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 8, above which is the exterior deflector (Z. These deflectors a 6 cl are all surfaces of double curvature placed above the line of truncation of the conical surfaces at the distance of the apex of each from said line. They are each of a greater diameter than the openings bot-h above and below them, as shown in Fig. 3. The casings B and C have each four side openings 6 and covered by plates 29 and p, and these opeir ings are so regulated that the openings of the inner casing come between the openings of the outer, as shown in Fig. 2.
In operation whatever wind passes under deflector (Z will encounter deflector b and will to a great extent be carried into the space 8 between outer and inner casings and escape through outlets 2'. Should any wind pass under deflector b, it will be carried by deflector a and cap 0 to the space D between the flue A and easing B, and escape through outlets c to space s, and then pass through outlets i. The current along cap 0 creates outward currents through the space 7' f so that any air passing under deflector a will be drawn through these spaces instead of descending the flue.
By this construction the lamp will be entirely free from the influence of descending currents to which all locomotive lamps are liable.
I claim The combination of casings B and C, with the chimney A as described; the plates 79 and p alternating and the construction and arrangement of the several parts sub stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof, Ihave hereunto signed my name before two subscribing witnesses.
IRVIN A. WILLIAMS. lVitnesses D. GILLMORE,
GEORGE C. POTTER.
