UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM HART, OF BEREA, KENTUCKY.
lM PROVEMENT IN BUTTER-STAMIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,674, dated June 17, 1879; application filed December 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HART. of Berea, in the county of Madison and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Butter-Stamp, of which the fol-lowing is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for cutting out, stamping, and gaging prints of butter.
It consists of a cylinder in which works a plunger whose movement is regulated by a burr or nut working in a thread on the shaft,
of the plunger in such a way that the thickness of the print can be exactly gaged and its weight indicated. The end of the plunger is ornamented with an engraved design for stamping into the print.
The accompanying drawing shows a vertical section of my improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a metal cylinder, in the upper end whereof is socketed a wooden handle, B, with a central hole, a. In hole a. is placed a shaft, 1), the lower end whereof is screw-threaded. On this shaft is screwed a nut, c, fitting neatly in the plunger 0 can travel is regulated. This havin g been properly adjusted and the butter prepared, the end of the metal cylinder is placed upon the butter in a vertical position and forced down. The edges cut out a disk of the butter, which enters into the cylinder, forcing up the plunger as far as it will go, and this distance, of course, regulates the thickness of the print. The plunger is then, by means of the handle or shaft b, forced down, condensing the print and impressing the ornamental design on the top surface.
When one print has been thus out out and weighed, the remaining prints can be made without further weighing them.
The nut 0 can be made to increase or decrease the thickness of the prints, and thus change the weight.
The cylinder A, at its lower end, may be graduated on its outer surface, as shown in the drawing, so that the plunger can be set to stamp out a certain weight of prints.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in butter-stamps, the metal cylinder A, with handle B, and gagenut c on shaft 1), in combination with plunger 0, operated by shaft 1), substantially as described.
WILLIAM HART.
