PArER-RULER.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 42,012, dated March 22, 1864.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAvID MUNsoN, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Combined Adjustable Ruler and Paper-Cutter; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of the same, in which- Figure l, is a perspective vew of the combined adjustable ruler and paper cutter. F ig. 2, is a perspective view of the same inverted. Fig. 3, is a side view and Fig. 4, is a plan view of one end of the roller and the guide and set screws.

The nature of my invention consists in providing a ruler and paper cutter combined in one article and which is furnished with an adjustable roller on the under side, by means of which the ruler edge can be readily elevated to any desired distance from the paper to prevent blotting or for other purposes that may be desired.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.

I usually construct my combined ruler and paper-cutter of sheet metal in the form shown at A, A', A, Figs. 1 and 2, the raised portion forming a convenient place to take hold of and by means of which the article is used with great facility, at the same time that the under side forms a receptacle for the roller 4B and the guides and grooves.

The roller B is pivoted at its ends in small slides o, o, which work in grooves a, a, a, a, and is raised and depressed by means of the set screws C, C. This arrangel i l l l ment is for the purpose of elevating the ruler edge from the paper as may be desired. The same thing may also be effected by means of a single set screw as shown at D, Figs. l and 2. The roller in this case may of course be dispensed with. The edge A opposite the ruler edge is for cutting or tearing paper by, and is left raw for that purpose, and is either a portion of the ruler folded down and soldered a short distance back from the edge or may be a sepa-rate piece folded, and lapped and soldered on to the ruler portion as shown so as to stifen it that it may not be easily warped and kinked. The raised portion or Yrib which extends the entire length of the ruler serves also to stiffen it and keep ittrue. It is obvious that when the set screws are turned downward (in either arrangement) the ruler edge will be elevated and when they are turned outward the edge will be depressed and may thus be adjusted to any desired height from the paper.

The uses of the article are too apparent to need further description.

I do not of course make any claim upon the construction of a ruler with rollers on the under side, when they are not made adjustable, nor upon the use of thin metal for cutting or tearing paper by, as these are old devices.

That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The adjustable ruler and paper cutter4 when combined in one article and constructed substantially as shown and described for the purposes set forth.
