UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DWIGHT S. DOW AND M. CAMPBELL BROWN, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOK-KEEPING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
213.981, dated April 8, 1879; application filed December 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DWIGHT S. Dow and M. CAMPBELL BROWN, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Book-Keeping Apparatus; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Our invention relates to a book-keeping apparatus, or, in other words, to a device intended for the assistance of book-keepers, to be used in direct connection with their books; and it consists in a lateral strip, lined and headed to correspond with any account-book,
in combination with novel devices for holding the'strip and retaining it in any desired position, whereby it may be moved up and down the page of an account-book, for the purpose of avoiding any confusion or liability to an erroneous entry.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a detached view of a device embodying our invention; Fig. 2, said device as applied to a book.
- A is a strip of paper or other material, lined I and lettered to correspond with any particular account-book. This strip is placed within a frame, B, and secured against lateral displacement by means of the set-screw B. The strip A, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, is intended to'be moved up and down upon a page to correspond with the particular place where an entry is to be made. The lines and letters of said strip A correspond exactly to those of the account-book, and will serve to preventerroneousentries byplacinganycharge or item in a wrong column. There may be several devices employed, all of which willbe comprehended within our invention, whereby the strip A may be given a true up-and-down motion. For this apparatus one or more guidebars, C, may be used, which, suitably clasped or surrounded by any device attached to or connected with the strip A, will serve to prevent lateral displacement or any incorrect placing of the strip A.
E represents a clamp, within which is placed a curved follower, F, the latter being held in snug frictional contact with the guide C by means of one or more interposed springs. (Not shown in the drawings.) Within the/clamp E is secured a supporting -plate, G, furnished with inwardly-turned edges, for the reception and retention of the strip-holder. By turning vthe set-screw B down toward the supporting-plate G, the strip-holder may be firmly secured in any desired adjustment.
What we claim is- 1. A book keeping device consisting, essentially, in the combihatiomwith a strip lettered and lined to correspond with the heading of an account-book, and a holder in which said strip is secured, of a; clamp adjustably-secured to a guide, and means for securing the stripholder in any desired lateral adjustment within the clamp, substantially as set forth.
2. In a book-keeping device, the combination, with a strip lettered and lined to correspond with the heading of an accountbook, and a holder in which the strip is secured, of a guide adapted to be secured'to' a book, a clamp .for connecting the guide and stripholder, and set-screw for retaining the stripholder in-any desired lateral adj ust-ment, substantially as set fcgth.
In testimony w ereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
