0. L. NORTON. Spring Clip for Indexing Books. No. 231,349. Patented Aug. 17,1880.
INVBNTOR Jmw/ WITNESSES TORNBYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES L. NORTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPRING-CLIP FOR INDEXING BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,349, dated August 17, 1880.
Application filed March 20, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. NORTON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Spring- Olip for Indexing Books, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved spring-clip for indexing books which is simple in construction and convenient in use.
The invention consists in a clip of spring metal with sides of unequallength and having a sharp bend near the end and an index-letter stamped onto the part between the bend and the end of the clip, so that the clip can be.
placed on the end of a page with the lettered part projecting outward, and thus indicating the index-divisions of the book.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is afront elevation of a book provided with my improved spring-clip. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan and side view of my improved spring-clip.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The clip B is made of some suitable spring metal, which is lapped over itself in such a manner that the finger 0 is longer than the finger D, for the purpose of making it more convenient to place the clip on the edge of a page.
The clip is provided with a sharp bend, E, near the end for the purpose of preventingthe (No model.)
page from passing the front end of the clip, so that the part F between the bend E and the end of the clip will project outward from the edge of the page. A letter is stamped, engraved, or painted onto the part F, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
The above-described clip is slipped onto the leaves corresponding with the index-letter 0n the said clips, and in this manner any blank or reference book can be conveniently and rap idly indexed at a very low cost. The clips can be removed very readily and can be used for another book. As their gripe depends entirely upon the spring of the material, and does not require any rivets or roughened surfaces, it does not mar or damage the book.
I am aware index-tags have been fastened to the pages of a book by means of rivets or like devices, but this I do not claim; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an improved article of manufacture, a spring indexing-clip, B, made substantially as herein shown and described, with a bend, E, near the end and with an index-letter stamped onto the part between the bend E and the end of the clip, as set forth.
CHAS. L. NORTON. Witnesses:
OSCAR. F. GUNZ, O. SEDGWICK.
