IMPROVEMENTN FRINGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 210,869, dated December 17, 1878; application filed J une 24, 1878. i

To all Iwhom. it 'may concern:

Be it known that LAUGUST MOLL, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new Improve nient in Fringes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.

rI his invention relates to that class of fringes which are used for trimming purposes; and the improvement consists in a braided fringe having a binding-cord between the body or band and the fringed part, as hereinafter specified.

The distinctive characteristic of my fringe is, that the body or band thereof is a perfect braid, that every yarn ofthe braided body is used in the fringed part, each pendant being a single yarn, and that at the edge of the body or band, where the fringed part or pendants begin, there is a longitudinal cord or twisted yarn for keeping the band or body from unraveling and causing the pendants t0 hang perfectly.

In lny drawing, forming part of this specification, I have represented a short piece of in y improved fringe loosely braided, and inagnitied to illustrate clearly the characteristic thereof.

A is the body or band of my improved fringe, which is represented as a plain hat braid, but which may be of any of the fancy or ornamental patterns which are made on a braidinglnaclline. B is the fringed part of niy improved fringe, the pendants thereof being formed of a single yarn of the braided body A; and C is a binding-cord, formed of two or more threads or yarns, ruiming lengthwise, woven in the diagonal yarns of the braided fabric, and loosely twisted, in such a manner as to form an edge to the braided band A, preventing the same from unraveling, and at the saine time causing the pendants or cut ends B to hang straight and lie flat, which they would not otherwise do.

My improved fringe has the advantage over fringes with tape body that it will adapt itself more perfectly to any configuration ofthe object to which it is adapted, and, being made on a braiding-machine, it can be manufactured with any combination of colors, as each spindle can carry a differently-colored thread7 if required.

I have described and shown my fringe as being single; but it is evident that it could be made with a fringe, B, on both sides ofthe body A, and in that case there would have to be two cords, C, one for each fringed edge.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Abra-ided fringe the body or band A of which is a perfect braid, the fringed part B of which is formed of pendants of single yarns of the braided body A, and having the lon gitndinal cord C, snhstantiaily as and for the purpose herein set forth.
