Description
Jan. 4, 1938. A. R. FREDA WINDOW CLEANING DEVICE Filed Aug. 25, 1936 Patented Jan. 4, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in window cleaning devices.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a window cleaning device of the type that 5 may be mounted upon a window sill and positioned for cleaning the outer sides of window panes with the operator positioned at the inner side of the window to eliminate the danger of falling during the window cleaning operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a window cleaning device of the foregoing character that is shiftable in a horizontal direction along a window sill and embodying a lazy-tong arrangement carrying a cleaning brush or the like to be moved over a window pane,
With the above and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement 20 of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
In the drawing:-
Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical cross-sectional view through a window construction, with the cleaning device secured in position on a window sill, operable from the inner side of the window and illustrated as having a lazy-tong arrangement carrying a brush engaged with the outer side of a window pane;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, showing the lazy-tong arrangement for the support of the window cleaning brush or the like; and
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure l, partlybroken away.
As illustrated in Figure 1, the cleaning device is adapted to be associated with the window construction comprising the usual window frame 5, a sill 6 and vertically sliding sashes l carrying glass panes 8.
The window cleaning device includes an elongated casing, rectangular in cross-section with top and bottom walls 9 and l respectively, with connecting side walls ll, clamp arms l2 and I3 depending from the bottom wall I0, the arm l2 being engaged with the outer side of the window sill 6 while the arm I 3 has a clamp screw I4 threaded therethrough for engagement with the inner side of the window sill 6 for anchoring the casing in position on the window sill. A longitudinally extending slot I5 is formed in the upper wall 6 of the casing and the block l6 slidable in the casing carries a screw l1 projecting upwardly through the casing slot l5 for the pivotal support of a pair of operating levers or handles for a lazy-tong arrangement that carries a window cleaning brush or the like.
A pair of levers or handles I 8 are pivotally supported upon the screw pin ll above the casing anchored to the window sill and said levers l8 are provided with a series of pivot openings IQ for selective mounting upon the screw pin I 7 to vary the length of throw of the ends I8a of the levers l8' that are engaged with the lazytong arrangement when the levers I8 are operated by the hand gripping ends l9.
A lazy-tong arrangement is associated with the ends I 8a of the levers l8, a pin extension from each lever end lBa freely passing through a block 2| and retained thereon by the pin 22 shown more clearly in Figure 1. A plurality of links 23 as shown in Figure 2 that constitutes the lazy-tong arrangement has the lower links 23a thereof provided with heads 24 that are anchored as at 25 to the respective blocks 2| M while the upper links 23b of the lazy-tong arrangement carry a bearing member or socket 26 for the removable reception of a handle or stud 21 carried by a brush 28.
The casing carrying the block I6 is anchored to the window sill 6 with the ends Illa of the levers l8 positioned at the outer side of the window sash 5 as shown in Figure 1. By operating the levers l8 through the hand grips IS, the lazy-tong arrangement 23 is moved in a vertical direction for causing the window cleaning brush 28 or similar device to be moved over the outer side of a window pane 8, the block l6 being freely slidable in the casing so that the cleaning device 28 may be moved over the entire area of the outer side of the window pane 8. With a device of this character, the entire outer surface of the window pane may be thoroughly cleaned while the operator is located at the inner side of the window. It is to be understood that a squeegee may be substituted for the brush 28, or other suitable cleaning device employed to accomplish a thorough cleaning of the window pane.
While there is herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it is nevertheless to be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:-
1. In a window cleaning device, an elongated casing adapted to be anchored to a window sill at the inner side of the window and having a slotted opening extending longitudinally of its upper wall, a rectangular block longitudinally slidable in the casing transversely of the window, a pin rising from the block through the casing slot, a lazy-tong arrangement including operating means carrying the same and supported on the pin and projecting through the window opening and a window cleaning member carried by the lazy-tong arrangement.
2. In a window cleaning device, an elongated casing adapted to be anchored to a window sill at the inner side of the window and having a slotted opening extending longitudinally of its upper wall, a rectangular block longitudinally slidable in the casing transversely of the window,
a pin rising from the block through the casing; slot, a pair of levers adjustably pivoted on the pin, a lazy-tong arrangement supported on the levers and projecting through the window open ing, and a window cleaning member carried by the lazy-tong arrangement.
lazy-tong arrangement, and a block at the outer end of each lever with the lower links of the lazytong being attached to the blocks.
