Description

L. D. NOBLE. Swing.
No. 2o9',623., Patented Nov. 5,187&
UNITED- STATES PATENT OFFICE.
L. DAVIS NOBLE, OF CERRO GORDO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT INSWINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,623, dated November 5, 1878 application filed I November 23, 1877.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, L. D. N OBLE, of Gerro Gordo, in the County of Patt and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cradles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificaton, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the invention; and Fi g. 2 a plan View, showing the arrangement of the devices for connecting the cradle with its suspending bar or staff'.
Similar letters of referenceindicate the same parts in the several figures.
My invention has for its object theimprovement of swinging cradles; and it consists, first, of a sta-if provided at its lower end with a sling or support for the cradle, and at its upper end with a wide flat hook to engage With a staple, D, and permit the cradle to swing lon gitudinally without turning or oscillating laterally; and, secondly, in certain devices of novel Construction for connecting the cradle to the lower end of the suspending stati'. In the drawings, A represents the suspending staff, carrying a cradle, B, at its lower end, and having a hook, O, at its upper end, by which it is swung to an eye or staple, D, secured to the joists or ceiling E. This hook G is made broad and flat, so that the staffwill V swing steadily and be prevented from twisting and wabbling from side to side. The staff is preferably eonstructed of Wood, although metal or fiexible material may be enployed, if found desirable.
I prefer to connect the cradle to the staff by means of a socket, F, sccured to the lower extremity of the staff, and constructed to receive suspendin g arms f f, which project laterally toward the ends of the cradle, and are connected therewith by links l or other fastenings. The arms ff have angular shanks f' f', which are adapted to slide vertically in corresponding guides in the socket. When putting in or taking out the baby, these arms are disengaged from the socket and thrown back over v the ends of the cradle, out of the way, as will be readily understood.
The cradle, when set in motion, does not'require constant attention, but will swing for a considerable time without a second impulse. The cradle proper may be made of any suitable material, and in any preferred form.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a swinging cradle, the stati' A, provided at its lower end with a sling or support for the cradle, and at its upper end with a wide flat hook, O, to engage with a staple, D, and permit the cradle to swing longitudinally without turning or oscillating laterally, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the socke't F, Secured to the lower end of the staff A, with the removable laterally projecting arms f f, connected to the cradle, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
L. DAVIS NOBLE.
