To all @0.7mm t may concern:
Be 1t known that 1, JOHN Drrrnrok, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of the town of Perth, in the Province of Gntario and the Dominion of Canada,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammock-Supports7 of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hammock supports and the objects of the invention are to render the support collapsible, so that it vwill occupy a minimum of space when folded up, thereby facilitating shipping or storing during winter months when hammocks `are out of commission.
Y Further objects are to render the support of a portable nature so that the hammock may be readily placed in any position to suit the requirements of the user, to permit of the `several arts of the suooort beiner uickl f P ll a (l assembled to combine durability with lightness of construction, so that no inconvenience will be experienced during the moving of tho support Vwhen the position of the hammock is being altered, and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required of them.
W'ith the above and other objects in view, the invention consistsessentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings formingV part of the same.
11i the drawings: j
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a toy hammock support.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view part being broken away and in section of an embodiment of the invention as applied to lianimocks in every day use.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail of the devic when folded.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved hammock support and B the hammock slung thereon. The support A comprises a base 10, which in that form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 1 consists of two portions 8 and 9 connected at their adjacent ends by the hinge 11, the base being substantially rectangular and provided with a central orifice 12 which gives lightness to the structure. At each end of the frame a projection 13 is formed provided with an outer beveled face 141, and to these projec- Specicaton of Letters Patent.

tionsnthe arms 15 are hinges 16;
It shouldfbe particularly noted that the hlnges 16 are located adjacent to the lower ends of the arms 15, and that the lower projecting part of each arm is adapted when in an upright inclined position to engage the beveled face 14 of the projection 13 which acts as a stop member and limits the backward movement of the arms. Each arm 15 is provided withr a bail 17 pivotally attached at one'end thereto, the other end of the bail being adapted to engage with a pin or stop member 18 secured to the base 10 adjacent to the projection 13;
TowardV the upper end of each arm 15, a hook 19 is secured from which the hammock is suspended. When the device is to be shipped, the hammock B is removed and rolledup'into a small bundle7 whereupon the hails 17 are disengaged from the pins 18 and the arms 15 rotated in a vertical plane into a horizontal position, whereupon the two pcrtions 8 and 9 of thebase 10 are foldedone on top of the other, making a small' compact bundle of the support. l
1n that form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 2. the support A consists of a pair of longitudinally extending members 20 held in spaced relation by the transversely eX-` tending members 21 and 22, secured to the-bottom thereof. At the ends of the members 20 the arms 15a are pivot- Qally attached' 'byl the hinge pins 16?, and
the lower ends of the arms below the hinge pm are adapted, when the arms are elevated and angnlarly disposed, to engage with the `transversely extending stop members 21 which limit the rotation of the arms.
The arms 15a' are `locked in an angular position by the hinge member 23, which is provided with a knuckle joint, so, that when the hinge is opened the arms will not yield or become liable to collapse when a force is exerted thereon. This hinge member 23 is pivoted at one end to thearm 15a and at the other end to the transversely extending member 22.
To give the support A the desired stability, so that it will not rock laterally, I provide adjacent to each end a transversely 'eX- tending bar 24, which is located below the members 20, and is secured in position by means of a bolt 25 which passes through the clamping plate 26 located above the said members. The arms 15a are provided adjaconnected by the position the the hinge member 23 will bev fully opened, so that the knuckle joint of the hinge member interlocks and thus prevents any liability of collapse ofthe hinge when the load comes upon the support. The transversebars 24C are next located and secured in position by the clamping plate 26 and bolt 25. Vhen the arms l5a have been so arranged, the hammock B is then slung in position. i
In disassembling this form of support it is only necessary to loosen the bolts 25 when the clamping plate can be rotated until it falls between the side members 2O whereupon the transverse bars 24e are free to be removed from and placed along side of the members 20. The hinge members 23 are now pulled outwardly at the joint andthe arms 15a rotated in a vertical plane until they lie between the members 207 so making a compact bundle of the support ready for shipping. 4
F rom this 'description it will be seen that I have invented a hammock support ol an extremely simple nature, light in construc- Copies of this patent may be obtained for above construction and many apparently widely diderent embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
`What I claim as my invention is:
A device of the class vdescribed comprising two U-shaped members hinged together end to end with the legs of the U-shaped mernbers abutting, the outer ends of the U-shaped members being beveled downwardly and inwardly, hammock supporting arms hinged to the U-shaped members at the base oit' the U7 the hinge being on the face oi' the U-shapedmembers opposite the hinges securing the legs together', a portion of the arms being below the hinges whereby they engage with the beveled edge of the U-shaped members so that their pivotal movement outwardly is limited but greater than a right angle and forms an obtuse angle with the upper 'face ofv the U-shaped members, and. locking members for securing the arms in operative position including pivoted bails 17 on the arms, and studs on the U-shaped members adapted to engage the ends of the bails, the device when folded having the two' U- shaped members bent back upon themselves, and the arms folded upon their adjacent 'ti-shaped members7 so that the U-shaped members when :folded lie between the folded arms.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
