ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 14, 1937 UNITED STATES HANDBAG Benjamin Potash, New Brunswick, N. J.
Application July 19,
1 Claim.
The present invention relates to improvements in ladies hand bags, and contemplates the provision of an article of that type having a detachable cover which may be reversed or may be replaced by another cover whereby various attractive designs and color schemes may be attained in an expeditious manner. Y
The modern trend in feminine apparel, as above indicated, is to have the accessories, i. e., hat, shoes, gloves and hand bag harmoniously related, particularly in color, to the dress, suit or other garment of the wearer.V To provide a different hand bag for each ensemble is not, of course, feasible for the great majority of women. Hence, it is desirable to provide for their use, a hand bag of the above described type which can safely be handled without fear of inadvertent separation of the cover from the bag body with the attendant possible loss of the bag body and the contents thereof.
More particularly, therefore, the invention contemplates the provision of a hand bag provided with handle means permanently secured to the body thereof and a removable, reversible cover therefor, said cover being provided with an opening through which said handle may protrude to be grasped by the user.
The above and other objects of the invention will become more clearly apparent from the following detailed specication in which the invention has been set forth, and from the accompanying drawing in which the invention has been exemplified.
In the drawing: l
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a hand bag constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a front View thereof showing the manner of securing the reversible cover.
Fig. 3 is a view of the cover in a flat condition.
Fig. 4 is a front view of a bag provided with an ornamental reversible panel.
Fig. 5 is a similar view thereof showing the reverse of the panel shown in Figure 4.
In greater detail, and with reference to Fig- 45 ures l, 2 and 3, the bag body Ill is constructed in the usual manner but is provided on certain outer portions thereof with means such as the fastener studs IVI. The bag body may be finished,
if desired, with a material suitable to be exposed for wear but in the present instance it is desirable that the bag body be nished in an inexpensive yet durable material of no particular color or texture.
In thepresent disclosure the bag is formed as an envelop of conventional design and is provided upon its rear surface with a strap handle I2 permanently secured thereto as by'means of the stitches I3. Y
1935, Serial N0. 32,149
As contemplated in this invention, the bag is provided with a cover I4 adapted to cover and to be separably secured to the outer surfaces of the bag as by means of the fastener sockets I5 which cooperate with the studs II for this purpose.
The cover is provided, in this instance, with an opening I6 through which the strap handle I2 is arranged to protrude. As is readily understood one side of the cover may be made of one material or color and the other side of afdifferent material or color, the outer surface of the strap being made of one of said materials or colors or harmonious therewith. Y
As can be seen from the foregoing, the cover can be readily and quickly reversed to suit the tastes and desires of the user and it will be noted that the bag can safely be carried since the handle forms a permanent part thereof and the hand of the user prevents inadvertent dislodgement of the cover from the bag body.
One bag body provided with a plurality of varying covers would therefore sufce to meet any exacting needs of the user.
While in this disclosure, an envelope type of bag is described, it is apparent that any shape or design of Vbag may form the basis upon which the invention can be applied.V Also, other handles, whether of the strap or metal knobs or chains, may be employed with equal facility. Y
In the form ofthe invention as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the bag may be provided with a reversible panel Il, secured as above described and positioned in relation tothe bag exterior surfaces to provide differing pleasing effects in design or color. y
While the invention has been described in considerable detail, it should be understood that modifications in design and structure, too numerous to outline in the present disclosure, may well be made by those skilled in this art. The scope of the following claim, therefore, should rather be based on the prior art.
I claim:
In a hand bag of the envelope type having an Y overlying closure fiap, an irregular configuration on the free end of said flap, means forchanging the outward appearance of the bag comprising a panel adapted to be reversely applied to the face of the bag over which the irregular flap extends, and means for removably securing said Y BENJAMIN POTASH.
