Description

G. W. Wl LSON June' 15 1937' LEVEL Filed April 14' 1936 Patented June 15', 1937 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in geometrical instruments, and more particularly to a novel level.
The principal object of the p-resent invention is to provide a level employing a slidable shield which will permit of the level being conveniently used in conventional manner and which when adjusted will cover and protect the fragile part of the level even when the same is roughly handled.
During the course of the following specication other important objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader.
In the drawing:
l5 Figure 1 represents a side elevational View of the level;
Figure 2 represents a perspective view showing how the end blocks and side walls are assoelated;
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken substantially on line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is an end elevational view of the level;
Figure 5 is a cross section taken in the plane 5 indicated by the line 5 5 of Figure 1, looking toward the left.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the numeral 5 represents the level stock provided with 30 lateral anges at its upper and lower longitudinal edges, these flanges being denotedE by the numeral 6. The upper and lower flanges are provided with longitudinally extending grooves I in their opposed sides for receiving the side Walls 35 8-8 of the shield.
At spaced intervals, the stock 5 of the level has openings 9 therein, Figures 1 and 3, in which are mounted the level glasses at I0.
One end of the body 5 is closed as at II while 40 its opposite end is open and provided with parallel extensions at I2-I2,
The ends of the Walls 8-8 are secured by (Cl. S3-211) screws I3 to the end blocks I4 which are notched at their upper and lower ends as at I5, Figures 2 and 4, to accommodate longitudinal central ribs I6 on the upper and lower portions of the stock adjacent to the ends thereof. The said ribs I6 are shown in Figures 1 and 4 on the extensions I2 at the right hand end of Figure 1, and they are also shown in Figure 5 on the upper and lower portions of the stock adjacent to the left hand end thereof. 10
The side walls 8 are provided with open portions I 8 and closed or imperforate portions I l. Obviously, by sliding the shield along the body 5, the closed portions I 1 can be brought over or opposite the openings 9, thus shielding the level glasses when not in use.
By virtue of the side walls 8 of the shield being disposed and slidable in the grooves 'I of the stock flanges 6, the shieldis disposed in and protected by the stock.
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size, and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
The level described comprising a stock having transverse openings at intervals in its length and also having upper and lower lateral flanges with longitudinal grooves in their opposed sides, indicating means including glasses in said openings, and a longitudinally slidable shield having side walls disposed in said grooves and also having end portions joining said side walls and guided in the stock; the said side walls of the shield having spaced closed or imperforate portions and also having openings at opposite sides of said closed or imperforate portions.
GEORGE W. WILSON.
