IMPROVEMENT IN BARREL-COVERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 207,214, dated August 20, 1878; application filed July 5, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SYLVESTER W. SHEL- DON, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Barrel-Cover, of which the following is a specification:

Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.

My invention relates to removable covers for barrels; and it consists in a cover made in three hinged sections, one of which is provided with a clamping device for securing it to the barrel, and the other two are arranged to fold together, and also to fold upon the fixed portion.

Referring to the drawing, A is a barrelcover composed of three pieces, a I) c. The piece a is provided with two short studs, (1, near its outer edge, which are each provided with a pointed nib, e, that projects toward the center of the cover. In the middle of this piece a, and on the diametrical line of the cover, there is a dovetail-shaped guide, f, to which is fitted a curved piece, g, which fits the inner surface of the chine of the barrel, and has upon its inner surface a metallic friction-plate, h. A cam-lever, i, is pivoted to the guidef, and when turned on its pivot it bears upon the plate h, and forces the curved piece 9 outward against the chine of the barrel, thus clamping the chine firmly between the piece 9 and studs d. The middle section, b, of the barreleover is hinged to the section a, so that it will fold over upon its upper surface.- The section 0 is hinged to the section b, so that it will fold down upon it when the said section bis folded down 011 the section a. i

The object in making the cover in three hinged sections is to permit of opening it under a shelf, or in a place where it would be impossible to open a cover made in two sections.

Another advantage claimed for my improved cover is, that it may be folded compactly together for shipment and storage.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the guide f, slide-piece g, plate h, and cam-lever iwith the section a, as and for the purpose specified.
