The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in a braking device for a toy vehicle and more particularly to an improved braking device for a motor operated toy vehicle.
An object of the invention is to provide, in a motor operated toy vehicle, a braking device which is adapted to be moved into positive looking engagement with one of the gears in the driving train.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a motor operated toy vehicle, a braking device Which cooperates with one of the intermeshing driving gears to slow up the motor and to thereafter positively lock the gear against movement.
A still further object of the invention is to provide, in a motor operated toy vehicle, a braking device which positively engages between the teeth of one of the intermeshing driving gears at a point removed from the line along which the gears mesh.
A still further object of the invention is to provide, in a motor operated toy vehicle, a braking device which is slightly resilient and which first cooperates with one of the intermeshing driving gears to frictionally slow up the motor and which thereafter positively locks the gear against movement.
The above and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will be hereinafter more fully pointed out.

The invention will be described in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein the invention is shown as applied to a toy automobile, although it is to be clearly understood that the invention may be applied to any type of toy vehicle. The body I0 of the vehicle isshown as of the coupe type for purposes of illustration only. The body is supported by front wheels II and rear driving wheels l2. The rear wheels I2 are mounted on an axle I3 which extends through a housing I. The housing I4 is secured to the vehicle in any suit- 1935, Serial No. 12,719
able manner and is provided with downwardly extending portions l5, a which support the axle 13. A spring motor of similar construction to that shown in the Rechel Patent No. 1,512,136, granted October 21, 1924, is mounted 5 within the housing I 4 and is provided with a handle 16 by which the motor may be wound. The crown or driving gear I! which is enclosed within the housing and which is driven by the spring motor in the usual manner, meshes with a pinion gear I8 on the shaft l3. There is an opening 19 in the housing M which permits the pinion l8 to rotate.
A braking device cooperating with the gear I8 is provided so that the motor and toy may be stopped with the motor wound up. The braking device includes a lever 20 having a gear engaging arm or brake portion 2| and a handle portion 2% which extends to the rear of the toy. The lever 2|] is pivoted intermediate its ends as at 22 to the bottom of the housing l4 and is movable in a plane intersecting the path of the gear I8. It is to be noted that the pivot 22 extends at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the gear I8 and that the lever 20 swings in a plane which passes through the gear l8 longitudinally thereof. The dotted line position of the lever 20, in Fig. 2, shows it in a released position wherein the vehicle may be moved about and the motor is free to actuate the rear wheels l2 through the crown gear I! and the pinion gear [8 when the spring is Wound up. The full line showing of the lever 20, in Fig. 2, shows it in locking position with the extreme end 2la thereof between two adjacent teeth I80 on the pinion IB. This is more clearly 35 shown in Fig. 3. It is to be noted that, when the lever is in locking position, the end 2m thereof engages between the teeth IBa of the pinion l8 at a point removed from the line along which the gear I! and the pinion intermesh. Thus, it will be seen that any damage which the brake lever 20 might cause to the gear I8 will not occur at the points along which the two gears intermesh so that a driving connection will always be maintained. The portion 2! of the lever 20 is slightly resilient and it is to be noted that, as the lever is moved about its pivot 22 into braking position, the end Zia will frictionally' engage the outer ends of the teeth l8a of the gear l8. As the gear [8 rotates, the teeth I80. will bend the end 2 la of the arm 2| slightly, as shown in Fig. 4, and will pass thereover. This will cause a slowing up of the gear l8 and the motor so that when the lever is moved into full locking position, the shock will be greatly reduced.
The present invention, therefore, provides a braking device for a spring motor operated toy vehicle which is adapted to slow up the motor first, due to the resiliency of the arm 2|, and to thereafter positively lock the motor against movement.
Of course, it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention asset forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a toy vehicle, driving wheels, 2. motor, intermeshing gears for providing a driving connection between said motor and said wheels, and a brake device movable into locking engagement with one of said gears at a point removed from the intermeshing portions of the gear teeth.
2. In a toy vehicle, driving wheels, a motor, intermeshing gears for providing a driving connection between said motor and said wheels, and a brake lever having an arm which is slightly resilient, said arm being movable first into frictional engagement with the outer edges of the teeth of one of said gears and finally into locking engagement with the said gear at a point removed from the intermeshing portions of the gear teeth.
3. In a toy vehicle, driving wheels, a motor, intermeshing gears for providing a driving connection between said motor and said wheels, and a brake lever pivotally mounted for movement in a plane passing longitudinally through one of said gears, said lever being movable into locking engagement with said gear at a point removed from the intermeshing portions of the gear teeth.
4. In a toy vehicle, an axle, wheels carried by said axle, a housing, a spring motor mounted in said housing and including a driving gear, a pinion gear on said axle intermeshing with said driving gear, and a lever pivotally mounted on said housing and having an arm movable in a plane passing longitudinally through said pinion gear and into positive locking engagement with said pinion gear at a point removed from the intermeshing portions of the teeth of said driving gear and said pinion gear.
