[Classes 106 (i) and 106 (iii).] An odometer for application to the rotating axles of vehicles is mounted within the existing stationary axle box and part of the driving mechanism of the odometer is housed within an aperture formed within the end of the axle. An odometer L has a spindle F extending through an axial hole in the projection E of the disc C which extends into an axial hole D of the rotating axle A to the end B of which the disc C is attached. The spindle F is secured in position by a member G and pin H and has attached to it a housing K for the counter mechanism L. The disc C has a spiral thread or tooth J engaging with a toothed wheel T on the axle of which is secured a worm V engaging with a worm wheel N on the spindle of the counter mechanism L which is thus continuously actuated. The axle of the wheels T, V is rotatably carried by a projection U on the housing K and the said two wheels may be formed integrally. A housing Vl encloses the counter mechanism L and its driving gear and may provide an outer bearing for the counter mechanism. The counter L is prevented from rotating with the axle A by providing the housing K with a lug P to which a stop chain is attached. Where an outer bearing V<1> is provided an arm W may be arrested by a suitable stop fixed to a stationary part. In the modification shown in Fig. 2 the spiral thread Y on the disc C engages with a toothed wheel Q having a projection or pawl S to engage the spur wheel R and actuate the counter mechanism by ratchet or other gearing. The odometer is set to zero automatically or at desired intervals through the milled head Z. In another modification a thread may be arranged annularly around the counter and be in driving engagement with the disc C and an appropriate wheel of the driving train or ratchet mechanism of the counter. The counter mechanism preferably operates additively irrespectively of the direction of rotation of the axle A. The longitudinal axis of the odometer may be arranged parallel, at right-angles or at any desired angle to the axle A.
