Description

B. H. KENNEDY ACCESSORY FOR INFANTS' BATHING DEVICES Dec. 22, 1936.
Filed Mar'ch 21, 1936 I I N V EN TOR. flam/vw /7'. EIYNEOV fa/&54: a A TTORNEYS.
Patented Dec. 22, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE &065326 ACCESSORY FOR INFANTS' BATHING DEVICES 11 Claims.
This invention relates to infants' bathing devices and refers more particularly to an accessory consisting of. a bath curtain and a support therefor adapted for use in connection with a combined bath tub and dressing table.
The invention broadly comprehends an accessory of the indicated character which may either form a part of or constitute an attachment for the iniants' bathing devices and by virtue of which water splashed during the bathing or spraying of the infant is intercepted and returned to the tub in order to avoid wetting of the floor, wall or furniture in the vicinity of the device.
More .particularly the invention 'esides in the provision of flexible curtain sections and means for supporting the same in juxtaposition to the tub so as to provide a sheld at the ends and rear side of the tub extending upwardly therefrom to intercept water splashed during the bathing operation.
The invention further contemplates a foldable curtain supporting frame which consists of a rear curtain rod having rearwardly and inwardly directed opposite terminals each of which is provided with 'a depending supporting extremity associated with the bathing device to position said rear curtain rod above and substantially parallel to the rear side of the tub and end curtain rods having slidable connection respectively with the terminals of the rear rod and which are adapted when set up to extend forwardly over and rest upon the opposite ends of the rear curtain rod to dispose said end. rods above and substantially parallel to the ends of the tub.
As a further feature the invention comprehends an accessory of the indioated character which includes a foldable curtain supporting frame which may be detachably associated with and supported by a bathing device and sold as an attachment therefor and which when not in use may be compactly folded to occupy a minimum amount of space for storage and shipment either when applied to the bathing device or detached therefrom.
The invention is also directed to an attachment or accessory of the character set fort-h which when applied to bathing devices which include a tub and a dressing table does not interfere with the movement of the dressing table to and from its active position.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention is more specifically described in the following specification and accompanying drawing wherein there are disclosed several preferred embodiments thereof while the claims cover Vari- -ations which fall within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View illustrating the accessory in applied position to a bathing device. 5
10 Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary rear View of the accessory in its applied position.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the curtain frame illustrating the same formed integral with the screen guard irame of the bathing device.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, A designates generally a bathing device which is preferably of the type which includes a collapsible tub !0 mounted on a collapsible cross leg supporting structure l I and including a dressing table |2 which is movable from a depending position at the rear of the supporting structure to a position overlying and supported above the tub ID. The bathing device also includes a screen guard comprising a frame |3 attached to the supporting structure I l and extending upwardly therefrom at the rear of the tub with a pocketed panel |4 fitted over the frame |3 and adapted to be swung to a folded position when the tub and supporting structure l I are collapsed. 3
In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs.
1 to 4 inclusve, the accessory which is designated generally by the reference character B is devised as an attachment for the bathing device A and comprises a pair of rear curtain sections 15 and a pair of end curtain sections [6 together with a supporting frame therefor consisting of a rear curtain rod H and end curtain rods [8. The rear curtain rod I'I is formed with rearwardly and inwardly directed opposite terminals IS respectively joined by bights 20 to the opposite end of the rod I 1, the terminals IS being substantially parallel to and disposed in the same horizontal plane with the rod I'l. Each terminal !9 is formed with a depending extremity ZI, the 45 tremity 2l, and the rods |8 when in active posi- 55 free end thereof.
tion project forwardly over the opposite ends of the rear curtain rod l8 and rest thereupon so that they are disposed above and substantially parallel to the upper edges of the ends of the tub. Preferably, the forward ends of said end rods are formed with hooked extremities 23 to prevent the accidental displacement of the end curtains therefrom. In use, the curtain sections !5 and l6 extend'downwardly into the tub to provide a continuous shield extending around the ends and rear side of the tub for intercepting' water splashed during the bathing operation and. for returning the water to the tub. .Therear curtain sections |5 may be readily'parted and moved towards the opposite ends of the rear curtain rod to permit the dressing table l2 to be shifted therebetween to a position overlying and supported by the tub. One of the end curtains IS is preferably slitted as at 24 to permit a spray hose 25 having a spray nozzle 26` to be extended therethrough. i
The end curtain rods 18 may be shifted from the set up active position illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, to a folded position as illustrated in Fig. 3 by 'sliding the eyes 22 outwardly around the bights 20 thereby swinging the arms 18 to a folded position substantially parallel with the rear curtain rod ll. i
The curtain sections 15 and !6 are preferably formed with hems forming tunnels 27 which are engaged over the curtain rods and which permit of the ready removal of the curtains from the supporting frame for laundering or replacing.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the rear curtain rod 30 is provided With rearwardly and inwardly directed opposite terminals 3! each having an eye 32 at the A depending extremity 33 having an eye 34 at its upper end is offset inwardly at its lower end'as at 35 and is permanently Secured to the frame terminal !3 of the screen guard. In this instance, the end curtain rods !8 are provided with a horizontally disposed eye 36 at the rear ends and a bolt 31 extends through the eyes 32, 34 and 36 and is retained in place by a thumb nut 38. In other respects the construction and operation of the accessory is identical with that described in the previous form of the invention.
