Application April 16, 1934, Serial No. 7205842 4 Claims. (01. 114-201) This invention relates to a hatch construction, and more particularly to those used on marine barges, although not limited thereto.
In the use of marine barges, for transporting Various commodities, it frequently happens that return cargoes can be procured at the unloading destination. The return cargo is often such that will require protection from the weather, as, for example, sugar or coffee, and the barge will therefore have to be provided with a hatch covering. However, ordinary types of hatch covers are not carried on barges transporting a cargo which needs no protection, as they would consume considerable space when not in use. 115 One object of the present invention is the provision of a novel hatch construction which provides complete protection from the elements and one which may, when not in use, be stored on the fore and aft decks of the barge in such manner as to consume but little space, and at the same time be unsusceptible to distortion.
Another object is to provide a device of the class described which may be rapidly brought into use to convert an open barge suitable for carrymg bulk freight which requires no protection from the elements into one which is well adapted to carry the most valuable cargoes.
Still another object is to provide a novel hatch construction Whichmay be cheaply and easily manufactured, and, at the same time, prove very durable in service.
These and further objects will be apparent after'referring to the drawings, in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 2 designates a marine barge providing storage decks 3, both fore and aft.
Down each side of the barge 2 there is provided an elevated side coaming 4, carrying on its upper edge an inverted channel 5. The end coamings of the barge 2 each comprises a vertically disposed plate Ii having an outwardly extending flange I on its upper edge.
According to the teaching of the present invention, a pair of structural shapes 8, such as channel beams, are provided with curved ends 9, and are each recessed adjacent both of their ends, as at It, in such manner as to conform substantially to the cross-section of the inverted channels 5 on the upper edges of the elevated side coamings 4. The recesses I 0 provide inclined walls I2 on their inner sides.
A .pair of angle irons I3, or other suitable structural shapes, are disposed between a pair of structural elements 8, one adjacent each of their ends, and are connected thereto in any suitable manner, such as for example, by welding. The angle irons I3 thus serve to maintain a pair of structural shapes 8 in spaced parallel relationship. A plurality of additional structural shapes l4 are connected between the webs of the structuralshapes 8 in the same manner as the angle irons I3. A paulin or cover I6 is arranged across the top of the transverse structural shapes I4,
and. provided with downwardly extending ends H, which are suitably connected to the sides of the angle irons I3, preferably by welding. The sides of the paulin I6 are preferably elevated, as at I8, in such manner as to extend adjacent, or make contact with, the Webs of the structural shapes 8. It is to be understood, however, that these. sides I8 may lie in the same plane with the paulin I6.
In practice, a plurality of hatch covers, composed of pairs of structural shapes 8, and the elements previously described, are disposed transversely of the bargez in such manner as to permit their recesses It to seat against the webs of the inverted channels 5 on the elevated coamings l, which permit the downwardly extending portions H, of the paulin I 6, to make intimate contact therewith.
In order to provide against the possibility of the elements entering the spaces between adjacent hatch covers, the flange on the structural shape 8 which is most adjacent the fore coaming 6 is provided with a substantially L shaped flashing 22. The flashing 22 is provided with a downwardly-extending portion 23, and is secured to the structural shape 3 by means of rivets 24. The L shaped flashing for the aft coaming 6 is reversed, as shown at 25.
The various hatch covers, composed in part of the structural shapes 8 are each provided on one of their sides with a flashing, which successively extend in opposite directions, as shown at 22 and 25 of Figure 4. However, some of the hatch covers may be made to carry a flashing on both of their side members, while those adjacent on both sides carry none.
Referring to Figure of the drawings, a modified form of the invention is disclosed as comprising a substantially U-shaped inverted trough 26, which is used to cover the spaces between adjacent pairs of structural shapes 8, in lieu of the flashings 22 and 25.
In Figure 6, a further modification contemplates the substitution of a pair of substantially Z-shaped structural shapes 29, in lieu of the structural shapes 8, and which are provided on their upper and outer ends with a downward extension 30 to cover the space between it and an adjacent structural shape 8, in lieu of the attached flashings 22 and 25.
In Figure 7, a further modification discloses one of the side members of the various hatch covers as being of an elongated L-shape 3|, carrying a strengthening web 32 on its upper end. In this form of the invention, the adjacent hatch cover is composed, in part, of Z-shaped side members 34, each of which carries a downward extension 35 on its upper and outer edge.
The various hatch covers are further protected from the elements by means of a gasket 31 on the outer edge of the inverted channels 5 on the elevated side coamings 4, and gaskets 38 which are disposed between adjacent hatch covers and between the end hatch covers and the fore and aft coamings 6. These gaskets 31 and 38 are only necessary for extremely rough water which may wash over the barge.
Referring to Figure 9, a plurality of centering lugs 39 are suitably secured to the inverted channels 5, and cooperating lugs 4! are secured adjacent the ends of each of the side members composed of the structural shapes described.
In order to rigidly maintain the various hatch covers against the coamings of the barge when extremely rough water is encountered, an ear 42 is secured to each end of each of the side members, of whatever structural shape, and is recessed, as at 43. An anchor plate 44 is riveted, as at 45, to the side coamings 4 immediately below each pair of adjacent cars 42, and is apertured as at 46. An eye-bolt 41 is connected through the aperture 46 of each of the anchor plates 44, and adapted to extend upwardly through a clamping plate 48 having an aperture 49. Each of the clamping plates 48 is transversely slotted, as at 50, to permit of their seating in the recesses 43 of adjacent ears 42.
The upper end of each of the eye-bolts 41 is threaded, as at 5|, and provided with a nut 52 for holding reach of the clamping plates 48 against a pair of ears 42.
Referring to Figure 12, adjacent hatch covers may be pivotally connected, by means of bolts and nuts 53 and 54, respectively. In practicing this form of the invention, a conventional lifting jack 55 is secured to one or both of the side coamings 4, and carries the usual jackshaft 56. A knob 51 is carried on the upper end of each of the jackshafts 56. A plate 58 is connected on the lower surface of the paulin 16 of eachof the hatch covers, and is contoured as at 59 in such manner as to provide a seat for the knob 51 on an adjacent jackshaft 56. By the removal of a bolt 53 and the use of one of the jacks described, one or more pivoted hatch covers may be elevated sufliciently to permit of loading and unloading the barge without disturbing the remainder of the hatch covers. Suitable sliding doors 60 are provided in each of the side coamings 4 for increasing accessibility through the elevated hatch covers.
When their use is not required, the hatch covers may be stacked on the fore and aft decks 3, and will rigidly remain in position due to the contact of the edges of their structural-shaped side members. A plurality of lifting lugs I5 is provided on each of the hatch covers for assisting in its handling.
While I have shown and described several specific embodiments of my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited exactly thereto, since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention, as defined in the following claims.
I claim:
1. A quick-detachable hatch construction comprising a pair of structural elements extending across the hatchway, said structural elements having recesses adjacent their ends conforming substantially to the cross-section of the edge of the hatch coaming, at least one structural element for maintaining said pair of structural elements in spaced parallel relationship, a rigid paulin supported by said last named element, said paulin having downwardly extending ends for enclosing the edges of the hatch coaming, an ear on the outer ends of each of said structural elements, an anchor plate secured to said coaming beneath each adjacent pair of ears, an eyebolt connected to said anchor plate, a clamping element on the other end of said eye-bolt, and means for fastening said clamping plate to adjacent pairs of ears.
2. A quick-detachable hatch construction comprising a pair of structural elements extending across the hatchway, said structural elements having recesses adjacent their ends conforming substantially to the cross-section of the edge of the hatch coaming, at least one structural element for maintaining said pair of structural elements in spaced parallel relationship, and a rigid paulin supported by said last named element, said paulin having downwardly extending ends for enclosing the edges of the hatch coaming and edges extending upwardly adjacent the inner sides of said pair of structural elements.

A quick-detachable hatch construction comprising a pair of structural elements extending across the hatchway, said structural elements having recesses adjacent their ends conforming substantially to the cross-section of the edge of the hatch coaming, at least one structural element for maintaining said pair of structural elements in spaced parallel relationship, a rigid paulin supported by said last named element, said rigid paulin having downwardly extending ends for enclosing the edges of the hatch coaming and edges extending upwardly adjacent the inner sides of said pair of structural elements, and a gasket between said paulin and the edge of the hatch coaming.
4. A quick-detachable hatch construction comprising a pair of structural elements extending across the hatchway, said structural elements having recesses adjacent their ends conforming substantially to the cross-section of the edge of the hatch coaming, at least one structural element for maintaining said pair of structural elements in spaced parallel relationship, a rigid paulin supported by said last named eleme'nt, said paulin having downwardly extending ends for enclosing the edges of the hatch coaming and edges extending upwardly adjacent the inner sides of said pair of structural elements, and means for raising at least one of the ends of said pair of structural elements.
