Description
G. SOHILLIN'G. Oatamenial Sack.
No. 205,912. Patented July 9, I878.
N-PETERS. PHOTO-LITMOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D c
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
GUSTAV SOHILLING, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO CARL GOTTFRIED VON PLATEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CATAMENIAL SACKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,912, dated J uly 9, 1878; application filed May 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV SCHILLING, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Menstruation-Oonfiner for Ladies, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification.
The nature of my .invention relates to an apparatus to be placed over the vulva of the female body, for catching and holding the catamenia or menstrual secretions flowingfrom the vagina; and it consists of an elliptic softrubber ring, shaped to embrace the vulva, and forming the rim for a rubber cap, havinga rubber bag suspended, into which the catamenia is collected, and from which it is discharged from time to time through a bottom opening closed by a rubbber stopper or screw-cap, the communicating throat between said cap and bag being arranged with a trap-valve.
This apparatus is held in position by two fore and. two hind suspenders, secured to a girdle placed around the waist, and removably attached to the cap of the apparatus by short straps buttoned to these suspenders.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a female figure with my apparatus attached. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the apparatus and its suspenders; and Fig. 3, a vertical section through the same, showing its internal arrangement.
A is an elliptic funnel-shaped rubber cap, joined with its exterior edgeto aring, a, made of round soft rubber, which forms the bearin g-surface to the female body, its shape being such that it will surround and cover the vulva completely without interfering with the motion of the limbs and joints. This cap A, by a short and narrow neck, B, is connected with a rubber-bag receptacle, 0, so flattened that it will be pendent between the thighs of a woman without impeding her movements, and otherwise so shaped that it will be no hinderance for her to sit down. The bottom end of this bag 0 is provided with an opening, which is closed by a rubber stopper, 0, or by a screwcap, and through which said bag can be emptied and washed out'as often as desirable.
A hard-rubber thimble, Z), is inserted into the neck B, the upper end of the opening in which is contracted, and forms the seat for a small rubber ball-"alve, E, pressed upward against said seat by a small coil-spring, c, which rests upon a cross-bar in the bottom of said thimble b. This spring (2, being very light, will yield to the slightest down pressure or weight upon said valve, thus admitting any secretion into said bag 0, and trapping it therein.
The cap A and its appending bag 0 are exteriorly covered with silk, thereby preventing the touch of the rubber with the skin of the person wearing it.
The above-described apparatus is trussed, so that it will retain its position over the vulva by two fore and two hind suspenders, f and f, from a girdle, F, buckled around the Waist, which suspenders are buttoned to short straps g, secured to the ends of ring a of cap A, so that the apparatus can be disconnected and removed, in whole or part, without the necessity of loosening the girdle F. The fore suspenders are placed to lie over the iliacal re gion of the female body, while the hind suspenders are passed obliquely downward over the os innominatum of the pelvis.
Such an equipage as described naturally must be a great blessing to ladies, and has been long sought for. Its construction and arrangement are such that it will prove a great comfort to the weaker sex, without being in any way an impediment to the movements of the joints and limbs, and at the same time it will be a protector to the sexual membranes against catching cold during the menstrual period.
What I claim as my invention is The herein-described apparatus, composed of cap A, having ring a, the neck B, having thimble b, valve E, and spring 0, and the bag O, having stopper 0, in combination with a suitable trussing device, the whole to be constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
GUSTAV SOHILLING. Witnesses JACOB RICHTER, EMIL H. FROMMANN.
