Description

P 1 3 E. L. WOODLEY 2,054,778
,BOOK COVER Filed June 11, 1934 Patented Sept. 15., 1936 UNITED STATES BOOK COVER Edward Leonidas Woodley,
Dallas, 'llexs assignor to Western Tablet & Stationery Corporation, Dayton, Ohio, a corporation of Delaware Application June 11, 1934, Serial No. 730,055
2 Claims. This invention relates to book covers of the class having a flexible fold with lines used parallel with fold of covers, such as stenographic note book covers and loose leaf bindersand it has particular reference to an inexpensive book and loose leaf binder cover so constructed as to be readily reversible to stand on ends at various angles for all practical purposes.
The principal object of the invention is to provide book covers that will stand in a reversed position on a desk or plane surface most advantageous to the reader, the elements of which are so arranged as to allow sheets of paper within the covers to be exposed to the readers view in line of vision by regulating the spread of the covers, regulating the distance to bring reading matter in focus guarding against eye strain, to shift position and adjust at an angle for better effects of light on reading matter, eliminating the injurious efiects of glare and reflection upon the eyes, to eliminate the need of a copy holder to hold work sheets in line of vision, it is found to be helpful to stenographers and students in copy work and to school children in all departments to enable them to sit erect and get a clear view of reading matter in the line "of vision, to discourage them from slumping or bending over sheets lying fiat and assuming an unnatural position in an effort to bring reading matter in focus.
With the foregoing objects as paramount, the invention has particular reference to its adjustable features and ability to stand in a fixed position at an angle in the construction and arrangement, which will become manifest as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure 1 is a perspective of a book cover constructed according to the present invention, on which is shown an open page in an angular position.
Figure 2 is a detail view in perspective of the actual supporting member shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 shows the book cover in fragmentary cross section combined with supporting means as applied on line 33 Figure 2.
Figure 4 shows the book cover in fragmentary cross section combined with supporting means in an operative position as shown in Figure 1. Figure 5 is a fragmentary view of a book cover combined with supporting means in sections.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary view of a modified form of a cross section of thebase of the supporting means.
Figure 7 is a modified form of the invention in cross section showing a book cover in fragmentary cross section and supporting means in an operative position as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary cross-section of the device shown in Fig. 7 with the supporting means in inoperative position. 5
Figure 9 is a form of supporting means incross section showing a plane partition connecting the walls, showing a cell below partition and open space above partition between the walls.
Continuing with a more detailed explanation 10 of the drawing, it may be first mentioned, the device which is the subject of this invention consists essentially of a. book cover the ends combined with an elastic rounding base shoe means wallsided with an inside adhesive surface which 5 device will support the entire structure in a stable manner to stand on ends in a fixed position at an angle, when placed on a desk or a plane surface.
Said supporting means may consist of an U- 20 shaped shoe 8 having an elastic rounding base and side walls 2. The actual book cover 3 is held in position between walls 2 by adhesion or other means, the base of I may have cups 4 and supporting the structure seat on desk or plane sur- 25 face and frictionally hold 3 at the angle in line of vision of the reader as shown by A Figure 1.
In order to bring about additional expansion of the base of i when in an operative position, the adhesive inside surface of 2 designated by 5 may 30 be varied to stop 3 between 2 above the base of l as shown by cell i, the expansion of the base of l in an operative position is shown in fragmentary view of 3 in cross section and cross section of I Figure 4 designated by 8.
Figure 6 shows a modified-form of the base of the supporting member viewing it as expanded having multiple cross partitions 9. Figure 7 shows a cross section of the form shown in Fig. 6 in an operative position expanded showing one of the partitions 9 and adhesion of walls 2 to fragmentary cross section of book cover 35. Figure 8 shows a cross section of the same form in a folded or non-use position and the adhesion of the walls 2 to a fragmentary cross section of book cover 3. Figure 9 shows a cross section of a form similar tothat shown in Figures 1 to 5 with a horizontal partition 6 connecting walls 2 and a cell 1 between walls 2 and under partition 6.
As a further means of increasing a surface com tact of the base of I in an operative position, the adhesion of 2 to 3 is not limited in scope of one side of 3 as to the other as shown by 5 in fragmentary cross section of 3 and cross section of 2 in Figures 7 and 8.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description, that I provide a book cover having ample supporting means to stand firmly at all practical angles on a plane supporting surface, that the device is highly serviceable, that the invention is not limited to specific construction and arrangement of parts as shown and described and that certain modifications may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or intent of the in vention.
What is claimed is:
1. A note book having covers with intermediate leaves all hinged to, turn through substantially 360 degrees, the covers extending from the hinge axis slightly further than the intermediate leaves, and friction means upon the cover edges remote from the hinge adapted to engage non-skiddingly with a horizontal surface upon which the book may be stood.
2. A note book having covers with intermediate leaves all hinged to turn through substantially 360 degrees, and non-skid friction means upon the cover edges remote from the hinge adapted to resist slipping of the covers upon a plane horizontal surface when the covers of the book are placed at an angle to each other with the supporting edges widely spaced.
