Definitions
- the overshoe is made of braided straw and is formed by sewing the braid over a last of the desired size and fashion. Straw being a non conductor of heat, the natural Warmth of the foot is retained, Without being subject to dampness, occasioned by the feet sweating, the strauv being porous, and either absorbing the dampness or allowing it to pass olf. This is a great improvement over the india rubber and in fact almost any other shoe now in use.
- T he heel is made of Wood and is fastened to the shoe by means of copper rivets.

STRAW AND WOOD OVERSHOE.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,439, dated June 1, 1858 To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that We, FREDRICK W. MICHEL, VILLIAM C. VILLCOX, and HENRY T. MILLER, in the city of Utica, county of Oneida, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Overshoe Manufactured of Straw and loodg and We do declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The overshoe is made of braided straw and is formed by sewing the braid over a last of the desired size and fashion. Straw being a non conductor of heat, the natural Warmth of the foot is retained, Without being subject to dampness, occasioned by the feet sweating, the strauv being porous, and either absorbing the dampness or allowing it to pass olf. This is a great improvement over the india rubber and in fact almost any other shoe now in use.
F or traveling purposes either by sea or land, and for persons Whose business requires them to be exposed to the Weather, this shoe Will prove invaluable, and greatly productive of the health and comfort of the wearer.
T he heel is made of Wood and is fastened to the shoe by means of copper rivets.
Letter A, in the accompanying drawing represents the shoe when complete; B, the Wooden heel thereto, and C, the braid of straw out of which the Shoe is manufactured.
-V1iat we claim as our invention and desire to obtain Letters Patent for is-- The straw overshoe constructed in the manner and for the purposes above mentioned.
