E. KISS. Wardrobe-Bedstead.
No. 204,34 Patented lVlay 28,1878.
NPETERS. FHOT0L|THOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
EMERICK KISS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WARDROBE-BEDSTEADS.
i Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,340, dated May 28, 1878; application filed iprn 3,1878.
To all whom it may' concern:
Be it known that I, EMERICK Kiss, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wardrobe-Bedsteads, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing', in which- Figure l represents a' longitudinal vertical section of a bedstead containing my invention, the parts being unfolded. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a View of the foot of the bedstead-frame.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in the combination, with a wardrobe-frame and a bed-frame hinged to the wardrobe-frame, of a horizontal yokeshaped frame which is pivoted to the upper part of the wardrobe-frame to support the top part of a canopy or curtain, cords or chains which are attached to said horizontal frame at one end, and attached to the hinged bed-frame at the other end, and suitable pulleys for guiding the cords or chains, so that when the bedframe is unfolded the said pivoted frame is automatically raised to a horizontal position, while, when the bed-frame is folded up, the frame is permitted to drop, and is thus folded within the wardrobe-frame; also, in the combination, with a wardrobe-frame and a bedframe hinged to the wardrobe -framc, of a vertical yoke-shaped frame which is pivoted to the bed-frame at or near the foot end of the latter, to support the side or end part of a canopy or curtain, and suitable devices for holding this frame in a vertical position, the same being adapted to be folded within the bed-frame; further, in the combination, with a wardrobe frame and a bed-frame hinged therein, of a yoke shaped frame which is pivoted to the upper part of the said wardrobe-frame, and capable of adjustment to a horizontal position, a similar yoke-shaped frame pivoted to the bed-frame at or near the outer end of the latter, and suitable devices for holding said yoke-shaped frames in their horizontal and vertical positions, respectively, whereby I obtain a support both for the top and the side or end part of a canopy or curtain.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a wardrobe-frame, and B is a bed-frame, which is hinged to the wardrobe-frame by means of pins a. I prefer to construct the wardrobeframe A with folding sides b, on that part thereof which is above the base, either in form of doors or curtains, so that when the bedframe B is in its lower position and the folding sides b are opened, as shown, the entire side of the bed thus formed is free. To the inner end of thebed-frame B is secured the usual weight, C, to assist in raising or folding the same.
The letter D designates the horizontal yokeshaped frame for supporting the top part of a canopy or curtain, this frame being pivoted to the upper part of the wardrobe-frame A at its opposite ends, as at c; and E are cords or chains, which are attached at one end to the yoke-shaped frame D, and at the other end to the inner part of the bed-frame B, the same being guided by means of pulleys d, which are so arranged that said cords or chains run along the back of the wardrobe-frame, and so connect the bed-frame and the frame D that when the former is raised the latter will be lowered. rIhe raising of the bed-frame, therefore, toa vertical position within the wardrobeframe causes the automatic lowering of frame D to a han gingposition within the wardrobe also.
The letter F designates the vertical yokeshaped frame for supporting the side or end part of a canopy or curtain, this frame being pivoted to the foot end of the bed-frame B at its open ends, as at e. Iprefer to connect the upper part of this frame F to the upper part of the wardrobe-frame A by means of flexible bands f. For the purpose of holding the frame F in a vertical position, I make use of hooks g, which are pivoted to a suitable part of the bed-frame B.
The letter G designates the leg-frame, by which the bed-frame B is supported in its lower position, this frame being connected to the outer end of the bed-frame B by means of hinge-joints h and H is a cross-bar, which is fastened to the end part of the bed-frame B by means of arms t', in such a manner that when the leg-frame G rests on the floor its upper part abuts against the cross-bar H, and is supported or braced thereby. rIhe legframe G is held in the position stated by means of hooks j, formed in one piece with the hooks g, for holding up the vertical frame F.
It Will be perceived that when the bed-frame B is unfolded the horizontal frame D is antomatically raised through the cords E, While, when the bed-frame is folded up, said frame D is allowed to fall by its own weight, and thus becomes folded within the wardrobeframe.
The advantage of using the cords E for rais ing the horizontal frame D is, that the cords are concealed and the side of the bed is left free. When the vertical frame F is released from the hooks g, the same can be folded Within the 4bed-frame B.
By the cross-har H a firm support is obtained for the leg-i`rame G, and hence the hinges by which the leg-frame is connected to the bed-frame B are relieved of all strain.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, :is-
1. The combination7 with a wardrobe-frame and a bed-frame hinged therein, of a yokeshaped frame, which is pivoted to the upper part ofthe wardrobe frame, and adapted for adjustment to a horizontal position to support the top part of a canopy or curtain, cords or chains which are attached to said yoke-shaped frame at one end, and attached to the hinged bed-frame at the other end, and suitable pulleys for guiding the cords or chains to automatically raise the yoke shaped frame. the whole being adapted to operate substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a wardrobe-frame and a bed-frame hinged therein, of a yokeshaped frame which is pvoted to the bedframe at or near the foot end of the latter, and adapted for adjustment to avertical position to support the side or end part of a canopy or curtain, and the hooks g j, for holding the said yokesliaped frame and the legs in vertical position, substantially as described.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 2d day of April, 1878.
