UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM GAMPERT, OF KEOKUK, IOWA.
IMPROVEM ENT IN WOOD-SOLES HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 03,608, dated May 14, 1878; application filed April 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GAMPERT, of Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wooden-soled Shoes, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a section of a shoe made in accordance with my invention, taken through the line 00 as, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish improved wooden soles for attachment to boots and shoes of any and every kind, which shall be so constructed as to make them suitable for general use, and which at the same time shall be simple in construction, strong, durable, and light, and not liable to get out of order.
The invention consists in wooden-soled shoes in which the soles are made in two parts, clamping the edges of the uppers between them, and secured to each other at their forward parts by a wedge-block formed upon or attached to the insole, to enter a wedge-slot in the outer sole, and at their rear part by screws, as hereinafter fully described.
A is the inner part or sole, which is placed upon the last in the same manner as an ordinary insole in shoe-making. The parts of the outer surface of the sole A upon which the edges of the uppers rest are then covered with a suitable water-proof cement, and the edges of the uppers B are drawn over it and secured by small nails or tacks. The outer surface of the insole A and the outer surface of the overlapping edges of the upper B are then covered with some suitable cement, and
the outer sole 0 is applied. Upon the outer part of the insole A, near its forward end, is formed, or to it is attached, a wedge-block, a, which enters the wedge-slot 0 formed in the outer sole 0, so as to keep the forward parts of the said soles securely in place so long as their rear parts are held together. The rear parts of the soles A G are secured together by screws D passing through the insole A and into the heel E, formed upon or attached to the rear part of the outer sole (3.
The screws D are supported and kept from splitting the insole A by a metal plate, F, placed upon or let into the inner surface of the rear end of insole A, and through which the said screws D pass, as shown in Fig. 1, and in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
With this construction wooden-soled shoes may be easily and conveniently made, and when made will be neat in appearance, strong, and durable.
The wooden soles A C may be made of any desired lightness, as the kind of the shoe to which they are to be attached may require.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A wooden-soled shoe in which the sole is made in two parts, A G, clamping the upper B between them, and secured to each other at their forward part by a wedge-block, a", formed upon or attached to the part A, to enter a wedge-slot, c, in the outer portion 0, and at their rear part by screws D, substantially as herein shown and described.
WILLIAM GAMPERT.
